This study offers a detailed understanding of the developmental changes in preschoolers' representational flexibility and response control in performing card-sorting tasks. A microgenetic design and the WCST64 were used to examine fifteen 5-year-olds' developmental changes in representational flexibility and response control as shown through their rule discovery. This study demonstrates the following several results about preschoolers' developmental changes of representational flexibility and response control. First, 5-year-old preschooler's representation of rule discovery in card-sorting develops through specific changes in a step-by-step pattern. Their development of representational flexibility goes through a systematic developmental sequence of simple representation, a modified representation of a modified representation, a combined representation of these representations, and an abstract representation.. Second, in this study, the preschoolers demonstrated no significant change in their development of response controls when they repeated the number of tasks.
