When examining tables of contents of ancient history in Japan’s 2007 high-school history textbooks, it is striking that they all describe ancient Japanese history according to the formation and development of ‘nation’ and ‘Japanese culture’.Japanese textbook descriptions of relations with the Korean peninsula have some problems. Regarding historical relations from the 4th through 7th centuries, the times of founding the three kingdoms of Goguryo, Baekje, and Silla during, the inscription of King Gwanggaeto’s stele, the indication of Gaya(Mimana)’s territory, and the affirmation of Nihonshoki are representative examples of inaccurate statements. Moreover, the chronologies and charts have problems that must be corrected. With respect to historical relations during the 8th through 10th century, Japanese textbook accounts show a decline in Japan’s relations with Silla and Balhae, while its relationship with Tang China grows. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that textbook references to Balhae are minuscule or excluded from Korean history.
