Happiness as life of Turning Out Well in Moral and Art

윤리교육연구 no.20 , 2009년, pp.169 - 184

R. Spaemann defines ethics as the teaching about how one's life can turn out well as explained in 『Happiness and Benevolence』. Happiness as universal purpose of life everyone wants a life, which must be conceived of as a whole and turned out well. For the whole life moral nobility has more important meaning than technical profit from Greek times. Namely the advantageous is not always, and the noble is not always advantages as Spaemann said, and as Plato said the beautiful is in itself good. Noble behaviour is to be considered in moral and art, in which human beings could find sublimation of instinct. Sublimation in moral and art could be attained by religious stage in S. Kierkegaard. For him social relation originates from as explained in 『Fear and Trembling』. Morality has to be suspended for the ultimate Imperative as human being stands before God. It means, that human being could not attain his moral request by his own capacity. Sublimation in moral and art as personal appropriation requests us to be before God as existential being in Kierkegaard. Because of human condition, perfectionism which is tried by autonomical ethicists could not to be attained as Kierkegaard explains. Artistic Sublimation as a form of human culture as explained by E. Cassirer has subjective and objective meaning. Formative process is to be carried out in a sensuous medium for creative expression in art. This creative expression in moral and art is to be attained by being before God in Kierkegaard.
