In the early days of Korean films, Korean classical novels were primary subjects to be made into films. Over time, however, it was growing less and less to make the classical novels into films. Up to date, only the 11 works of numerous Korean classical novels were made into films. Therefore, this paper aims to seek ways to make Korean classical novels into films.For this, the author is to organize the characteristics of the classical novels made into films so far and try to find any characteristics of similarity in the historical films produced after 2000.The historical films produced after 2000 have some characteristics in common. They are not tied up with historical realities and we are able to find a various of properties of genre in each film. They have these likeness because audiences are able to accept a historical film as a film not as a historical film.Up to date, the classical novels made into films deal mainly with love between a man and a woman and conflicts among family members. Their spatial background is our country. Moreover, they are widely-read works by people.After 2000, there is a huge difference in the contents between the film versions of the classical novels and the original works. It is because audiences are able to accept a film differing from the original work. And it is also because a film shows its value differing from the original work's. The problem is that people know only a few Korean classical novels. For that reason, there is a limit to what a film shows its value differing from the original work's.In order to transfer a Korean classical novel to a film, it is required that the classical novels are classified into a novel known to people and a novel unknown to people. In the case of a novel known to people, they understand the film around their own information about the novel. Therefore, a directors should be able to produce the value through their film distinguished from the original work's. In the case of a novel unknown to people, a directors should consider that people may misunderstand the novel's contents due to the film. And their should be able to show the original's value through them film because people have no information about the original work. Or else, their should be able to produce the value through them film without colliding with the original's.In order to vivify the values of both Korean classical novels and the films, the ways to make the classical novels into films should be sought in these viewpoints. In addition, the film version of a Korean classical novel may be positively used as the subject of a historical film in the boom of historical films.
