Martha Rosler is a representative woman Conceptual artist and feminist who has constantly made socio-critical works covering a wide rage of genres and mediums. Her works encompassing photomontages, photo-text works, installations and architectures address various social issues like a war, sexism, homelessness and so on. This thesis focuses on the food motif appearing in many of her works. Rosler produced lots of works which were set in the kitchen or dealt with cooking procedures especially in the late 1960s and the 1970s. A number of critics and researchers have pointed out the frequent appearances of the food motif in her works, but they haven't examined it closely.Rosler attempts to deliver the message that every aspect of our lives including our most intimate moments and our self-perceptions is affected by social ideologies. Food satisfies a basic human need and represents cultural differences clearly as well. Therefore, food can be an effective tool to convey the artist's critical message. In the past, foods had symbolic meanings or appeared as formative elements in the paintings, whereas foods are expanding the scope of art and reflecting the social realities in contemporary art works. Rosler also uses the food motif to criticize social problems.She portrays sexual objectification of women in a capitalist society through her photomontage works juxtaposing women's bodies with kitchen appliances or foods. In her video works and postcard novels, she also points out that the preparation of food has been the duty and drudgery of the housewife, so it has been used to oppress women. Plus, she argues that food can be a sort of window into structural inequalities of society and international political issues.As aforementioned, Rosler effectively used the food motif to create art works against mythology of everyday life. This study aimed to lay the foundation for comprehensive survey of her works which deals with diverse social problems. Also, this thesis attempted to verify that Rosler payed much attention to broad social problems beyond the bounds of women's issues unlike most of her contemporary feminist artists.
