초록

This study was to find a way to support volunteer education for children with intellectual disabilities via exploring the effects and difficulties of the on-site application and practice of the education program which is designed to educate special education major volunteers about developing communication skills of children with intellectual disabilities.To conduct the study, 4 subjects who are special education major students in K university located in Chungcheongbuk-do of South Korea participated in short-term volunteer education program which was designed to develop the communication skills of children with intellectual disabilities. As a result, the subjects showed improved communication skills after the program.Also, the study could draw three main subjects and nine subsidiary subjects from the focus group interview. The three main subjects were as follows: The difficulties of on-site application and practice of volunteer education program; The effects of the education program; the importance of volunteers' mediation methodology for the education program.As a result, subject's communication skills with the student's were improved, and they experienced not only a sense of accomplishment, pride, skill acquisition, and satisfaction but also the development of target student's while volunteering. For the more, subjects also stated that they could recognize the importance of volunteers’ attitude during the volunteering experience after the program.Hence, this study emphasizes the necessity of volunteer education program to ensure substantiality of volunteering for children with intellectual disability, not just mear helping purpose of volunteering.
