초록

The term ‘relationship’ has penetrated women’s lives amid two opposing arguments: a woman’s own identity versus a virtue which is socially learned. Moreover, many studies on ‘gendered fandom’ suggest that any experience of fandom could be relatively significant for women. This study examined the meaning of ‘relationship’ which the women over their late 20s made with the characters and both participants and non-participants through ‘fandom activity of animation’, by interview and autoethnography. The result showed that there is a kind of ‘completeness’, which does totally not correspond to the reality in the center of relationship between the participants and animation characters. Consistent intervention of this recognition of the reality, and contradictory desires have stuck out a mile in BL(Boys Love) genre, which is about the love between male characters. For the participants, creating the pieces of ‘BL’ genre worked as an opportunity to practice a person’s sexual desire and a doubt about the patriarchal hierarchy. What’s more, holding the necessity of ‘male’ and ‘the homosexual’, and the ascription of meaning to BL in check implies a gender identity of the participant mirrored to fan activities and concerns from it. Meanwhile, a communication between the members of a fandom acquires a sort of consequence more than common relationship in the reality, which means that distinguishing themselves from ones ‘outside’ their own fandom resulted from a fear of any social disadvantage or damage to their femininity represents in-depth meaning of fan activities in their daily lives. As a result, it requires re-defining existing concept of ‘relationship’, suggesting a interpretation of the fan activity for animation as a symbolic experience which makes it possible to recognize a realistic limit and a social discourse, and thoughtfully contemplate one’s own gender identity.
