Objective: Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the present study was to validate the Korean version of the of Psychological Needs Thwarting Scale (PNTS) by Bartholomew, Ntoumani, Ryan, & Thøgersen-Ntoumani (2011) in Korean physical education context. In addition, we examined the relationship between two psychological needs-namely (need thwarting and need satisfaction), and moral behaviors (prosocial behavior and antisocial behavior) in Physical Education (PE). Method: Study design is cross-sectional or correlational. Four hundred seventy-three students from middle and high schools, Seoul, Korea metropolitan participated in this study, and completed the self-reported questionnaire. The factorial structure of the PNTS questionnaire was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis across the study. Results: As results, PNTS comprised 3 factors and 10 items as follows: autonomy thwarting (3 items), competence thwarting (3 items) and relevance thwarting (4 items). And the PNTS within students were predicted by prosocial and antisocial behaviors. Conclusion: The newly adopted questionnaire grounded SDT demonstrated good content and factorial validity as well as internal consistency in PE context. Suggestions and recommendation for its use in research pertaining to physical education, exercise, and sport participation are discussed.
