초록

This study investigated the relationship between friendship quality and self-regulation of five-year-old Korean children. Friendship was evaluated by assessing the interactive behaviors of same gender friend dyads of five-year-old children and their perception of friends. Self-regulation was determined by measuring self-assertion and self-control in target children and their friends. The results are as follows: 1) The same gender friend dyads who were close friends showed more positive dyadic interactions and higher positive perceptions of friends than those who were not close friends. 2) They also exhibited elevated self-regulation with greater self-control thanself-assertion. 3) Results for individual genders indicated significant correlations among these measures: The greater number of positive interactive behaviors girls engaged in, the more self-control and overall self-regulation they exhibited; the greater the number of positive interactive behaviors boys engaged in, the less self-control they exhibited. Girls who perceived their friends more positively exhibited more self-regulation; boys who perceived their friends more positively exhibited less self-control. These findings will provide insights for developing educational programs that could improve children’s abilities to adjust, socially and emotionally, during earlychildhood.
