Prehistoric archaeology is an academic discipline aiming to understand life and environment of the prehistoric people.This article presents a functional analysis on the end-scrapers and their differential uses according to the size of the scrapers and the different worked materials. So in this article, we study end-scrapers from 7 different sites in Korea.It is one of the tools that reflects the history of the stone tools technology tradition of prehistoric mankind. It is excavated from most of the sites of the Paleolithic period in Korea. Until now, the study on the end-scraper generally only realizes the typology of the tools. The functional studies of stone tools have rarely been done. Therefore, in this paper, microscopic traces are observed on the surface of stone tools using a metallographic microscope. On the basis of experimental and ethno-archeological data, we will interpret the functions and use of the end-scraper To understand the use of the end-scraper, we refer to the ethnographic data on traditional leather processing in Canada, Siberia and Ethiopia. And by carrying out various experiments with end-scrapers, we can understand the characteristics of the traces according to materials worked and uses of tools.In order to examine the function of the end-scraper, I conducted comparative studies of end-scrapers chosen from seven sites: Punggok-ri in Gimpo, Osan-ri et Cheonggye-ri in Dongtan, Jisaeul II in Namyangju, Yongsujaeul in Pocheon, Seokjang-ni in Gongju, Sangsa-ri in Cheolwon, because end-scraper is the most-extensively identified lithic tool in the Palaeolithic sites in Korea.The use-wear analysis of them suggest that most end-scrapers were used for processing hides. However, it could be observed use-wear pattern formed by processing woods and antlers in large-sized end-scrapers. Therefore, it can be inferred that the use of end-scrapers depended on the size of these tools; but it seems that small-sized end-scrapers produced in the late Palaeolithic were closely related to work hide.
