This research aimed at investigating the characteristic of hypercorrection that had been discussed in association with ㄷ palatalization, and the significance of hypercorrection on diffusion process of palatalization.By comparison with the point that ㄷ palatalization is a change of ‘ㄷ, ㅌ’ in front of vowels ‘i, j’ to be replaced with ‘ㅈ, ㅊ’, hypercorrection explained the change of ‘ㅈ, ㅊ’ in front of vowels ‘i, j’ to be wrongly replaced with ‘ㄷ, ㅊ’, etymologically. Such change is because the language of that period could not distinguish this due to neutralization of ‘ㄷ, ㅌ’ and ‘ㅈ, ㅊ’ in front of vowels ‘i, j’ due to occurrence of palatalization, and combination of intension of speaker or listener to evade palatalized form as social nonprestige language, which was also mentioned as ‘부정회귀(不正回歸)’, ‘역구개음화(逆口蓋音化)’, ‘과잉수정(過剩修正)’, ‘역유추(逆類推).Hypercorrection in the existing discussion was a phenomenon that presupposed palatalization, no big increase appeared even after spread of palatalization by appearing along with occurrence of palatalization in the actual literature, rather, decreased or congested, differently from the expectation that palatalization would disappear when it is completed by occurring along with occurrence and spread of palatalization. This shows the influence of correction phenomenon on hypercorrection, which is a contrasting tendency to palatalization. Even after spread of palatalization, an intentional correction phenomenon to evade application of palatalization appeared in the literature, here, hypercorrection also increased. In respect of the significance of hypercorrection, there is a clue to interpret the intermediate stage where coexistence phenomenon between palatalized form and non-palatalized form in the diffusion process of palatalization, linguistic factors, and non-linguistic factors(social prestige, contact between dialects, individual language performance, etc.) are complicated entangled.Hypercorrection acts as a mechanism to delay diffusion of palatalization, because non-palatalized form of central dialect that has no palatalization acts as a social social prestige language.
