The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the colonial experience in Yong-san[용산] and its literary representation in the colonial period. In Japanese colonial period, Yong-san was the urban space of the other. In Korean modern novels, Yong-san appeared as a 'space' that can not grasp its recognition and status. In most of the novels in the colonial period, Yong-san was rarely appeared as the background or just passing by for a while. At this time, there is little clue to understand the placeness of Yong-san.This study takes a double strategy to capture the imaginative geography of Yong-san. First of all, this study respects the fact that Yong-san was a space for the other during the colonial period. In addition, this article collected depictions about Yong-san, which was fragmented and scattered in Korean modern literature. In other words, this study collects the description of Yong-san as much as possible and reconstructs the unconscious patterns in it. Thus, this article reconstructed the imagery of Yong-san as a space where the grudge of the colonized was projected, a landscape of the spectacle where leisure and death intersected, and an anonymity space to conceal the gaze.These results suggest a new reflection on the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. Here, the colonized did not experience the space produced by the settler, but appropriated it. And projected a new meaning. In this context, literature was the scene where this postcolonial practice was performed.
