Background: As the number of older drivers increases, traffic accidents caused by older drivers are also increasing. The car navigation app that increases the risk of accidents due to visual distractions does not reflect the physical and cognitive characteristics of older drivers. In order to provide the same universal user experience to the older driver, the application design considering the driving characteristics of the older driver is required. And we need an evaluation framework to evaluate whether universal user experience is implemented in the app design process.Methods: The author developed a navigation app design evaluation framework that reflects the physical and cognitive characteristics of older drivers through a review of literature on older driver's characteristics and observation of driving situations. To verify the appropriateness of the framework, a group of experts evaluated three domestic smartphone navigation apps and discussed the results.Result: According to the results of the app design evaluation by the framework, it was evaluated that three smartphone navigation apps with the largest number of users in the domestic are not considering the characteristics of the older driver in general. Especially, they did not cope with the decrease of physical ability including vision loss, attention loss and visuospatial ability.Conclusion: As the number of older drivers increases, the smartphone navigation app should include the older driver as a user, and the evaluation factor for them should also be included when evaluating the usability in the app development process. The navigation app design evaluation framework developed in this study will be a method to provide the universal user experience to the older driver by considering the physical and cognitive characteristics of them.
