The purpose of this study was to search what were differences in sibling's pattern according to birth order, and how the effects of reciprocal action turn out depending on sex composition, age gap btween siblings, the developmental stage, and so on in a certain factor. The date were collected from 216 middle school students who had either the elder sibling or the younger sibling, live in Taejeon, and was second grade. The total number was 432 including the students and their siblings. Sibling relationships questionnaire was composed of elder sibling 36 items and younger sibling of 34 items. Statistcal methods adopter for data analysis were frequencies, percentiles, mean, mean square, fourway ANOVA, oneway ANOVA. The major findings were as follows ; 1. There were differences of the behavior pattern of sibling relationship depending upon birth order, the elder was classified into the factors such as sibling caretaking, coalition relationship, sibling rivalry, sibling hostile. Sibling caretaking showed the highest average point among them. The younger was classified into the factors such as sibling closeness, coalition relationship, sibling rivalry and antagonism, willingness and reliance. These results showed that the characteristics of sibling relationship usually showed the affirmative trend. 2. When the elder showed any response, the effects of reciprocal action of sibling relationship were as follows. 1) In the aspect of sibling caretaking, sex composition and age gap between siblings showed the effect of reciprocal action. The same sex sibling showed higher figure than the opposite sex siblings regardless of the age gap between siblings. 2) In the aspect of coalition relationship, the effects of action appeared from sex composition. The same sex siblings showed higher the average figure than the opposite - sex siblings. 3) In the aspect of sibling rivalry, sex composition and growth step showed the effect of action. When the same sex siblings was a brother - brother and when the opposite sex siblings was a sister - brother, they showed the stronger sense of competition. The higher figures was showed in middle school student sibling relationship of all the developmental stage. 3. When the younger showed any response, the effects of reciprocal action of sibling relationship were as follows. 1) In the aspect of sibling closeness, the effects of reciprocal action appeared depending upon sex composition and age gap between siblings. 2) In the aspect of coalition relationship, the effects of action appeared from sex composition. The same - sex siblings showed higher figure than the opposite - sex siblings. From the consequences described above, there were differences of sibling behavior pattern according to the order of birth. Therefore some behavior patterns was differently recognized even if their contents was the same. And affirmative aspects rather than negative aspects was shown. While the effects of sex - composition had a major impact in the characteristics of sibling relationship. Usually there were very interesting results that the effects of reciprocal action appeared less in the brother and sister sibling relationship.
