The effects of alloying elements and annealing temperature on thermal conductivity and softening behavior of Cu - 0.1%Ag -X%PY%Mg, Cu -X%Sn - Y%Te and Cu -X%Cd alloys were investigated. The effects of Cr content above its solubility limit and thermomechanical treatment on tensile strength and electrical conductivity of Cu - Cr alloys were studied to obtain optimum Cr content exhibiting a high tensile strength without degradation of electrical conductivity. And also, the effects of alloying elements on electrical conductivity and tensile properties of Al-Ni-Mg -B alloys were studied to develope high electrical conductivity and high strength aluminum alloys for electrical application, The Cu - 0.1%Ag -X%P- Y%Mg alloys, inspite of greater amounts of P and Mg, had a higher electrical conductivity and a higher softening temperature than those of the Cu - 0.1%Ag - 0.031%P alloy, indicating that Mg is an effective element to increase the softening temperature and the electrical conductivity of Cu -Ag based alloys containing P. The Cu- 0.032%Sn- 0.023%Te alloy had the same level of electrical conductivity as that of the Cu - 0.040%Sn alloy and had the same level of softening temperature as that of the Cu - 0.095%Sn alloy. This indicates that Te is an effective element to increase the softening temperature without deterioration in the electrical conductivity of Cu- Sn based alloys. And also, Cd whose electronic structure is similar to that of Cu is an effective element to increase the softening temperature without deterioration of the electrical conductivity of Cu based alloys. The electrical conductivity and softening temperature of the Cu- 0.032%Sn- 0.023%Te and Cu - 0.2%Cd alloy is comparable with those of Cu - 0.1%Ag - 0.013%P alloy currently used for continuous casting mold materials. The increase in Cr content above the solubility limit in Cu- Cr alloys increased tensile strength of Cu - Cr alloys without deterioration of the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of Cu - Cr alloys was not affected by cold rolling. The electrical conductivity of a Cu - 3.5%Cr alloy subjected to cold rolling → aging treatment (450℃×1hr) → cold rolling was equal to that of the alloy subjected to cold rolling → aging treatment. However, the tensile strength of the alloy subjected to the former thermomechanical treatment was superior to that of the alloy subjected to the latter thermomechanical treatment at all the deformation degrees. Aluminum alloys were produced by wire fabrication process consisting of casting, reheating, hot extrusion and cold drawing. Ni in Al-Ni alloys was least detrimental to the electrical conductivity and increased the tensile strength of Al alloys by the formation of eutectic NiAl_3. The Al-Ni-Mg -B alloys had a higher electrical conductivity than that of the Al- Ni-Mg alloys and had the same level of electrical conductivity and tensile strength as those of the Al-Ni alloys. This indicates that B is an effective element to increase the electrical conductivity of the Al-Ni-Mg alloys by decreasing the solid solubility of Ni in Al alloys. The electrical conductivity of Al-Ni-Mg -B alloys was increased by additional precipitation of Ni-Al intermetallic compounds during hot extrusion. The Al- Ni-Mg alloys had a higher softening temperature than that of the Al-Ni alloys, indicating that Mg is an effective element to increase the softening temperature of the Al-Ni alloys.
