The purpose of this thesis is to propose a stage model of human development on the basis of the principles of human development in Eastern thought s and to review characteristic developmental phenomena in each stage. It was hoped that incorporation of the Eastern perspective into study of human development would enrich our under standing of human life. In Eastern thoughts, it is assumed that human development occurs following an universal sequence and that from the phenomenological perspective, human development is viewed as a change, not as a simple growth. It was also assumed that man and nature come from one source, and that human life changes following the same principles of changes in nature, that is, Yin·Yang and five evolutionary phases. In this respect, developmental model from the perspective of Eastern thoughts is close to the interactionist views concerning the role of nature and environment with emphasis on the nature. Since human development continues through the life course, it is appropriate to consider the entire life span in the developmental model. Thus the following five stage model of human development was proposed on the basis of the five evolutionary phases theory : childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. It was proposed that human development proceeds following the five elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water with each element representing each of the above five stages and characteristic developmental changes in each of the stages were inferred from relevant descriptions in the 『Huang Di Nei Jing』.
