Thermoplastic olefins of polypropylene(PP) and rubbery materials such as ethylene-propylene-diene-mononer(EPDM), natural rubber(NR) and polyurethane(PU) were prepared by the compositional quenching process. The final morphology, tensile property, Izod impact strength, surface property, and thermal stability of the PP/Rubber blends were investigated. The effects of the processing factors and the structural factors on the final morphology and the physical properties of the blends were also studied. The blend ratio of PP/rubber was 70:30 by weight, as the same composition of PP for automobile bumper, and compositional quenching was processed as follows the polymer-solvent mixture consisted of 5 wt% of the PP and rubber was poured into the dissolution tank and was heated to 100∼150 ℃ in order to dissolve the polymers. The polymer solution was fed to the heat exchanger at 200∼250 ℃ by the nitrogen gas at 10 atm. It was then flashed across a needle valve into a flash chamber held at 25℃, 0.5 mmHg. The blend prepared by compositional quenching was compared with the blends using conventional melt-blending(MB) and solution-blending(SB) methods. Also, PP/rubber blends were also prepared by adding reactive compatibilizers, leading to the chemical bonding at the interface of PP and rubber. Maleic anhydride-grafted PP(MPP), maleic anhydride-grafted NR(MNR) for PP/NR blends and MPP, hydroxylethyl maleimide-grafted PP(HPP) for PP/PU blends were selected as reactive compatibilizers. The each reactions between the reactive compatibilizers and the components of rubbers were confirmed with FT-IR. For the PP/EPDM blends, the size of dispersed EPDM particles decreased and the domain showed better dispersion In the scanning electron micrographs (SEM) observations as the following order ; MB>SB>CQ. In the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results, the crystalline melting temperatures(T_m' s) of the blends were slightly decreased compared to the T_m of PP only, and T_m' S of the blends by the three blend methods were gradually decreased in the order of CQ, SB, and MB. Thermal stability of the blends via thermal gravimetric analyzer(TGA) slightly decreased in the whole. Tensile strength and elongation at break of the blends by CQ were more improved than those of by MB and SB in the tensile test result. These results would seem to be due to the morphology control effect caused by rapid removal of the solvent in the compositional quenching process. For the PP/NR blends, the sizes of NR dispersion phase were decreased and the domains in PP matrix were well dispersed in the final morphologies in order of MB, CQ, and SB. In the results of T_m's measurements, T_m's of the blends were slightly decreased compared to the T_m of PP only. In the result of TGA, the blends by different blend methods showed nearly the same retention weights as the calculated value of PP and NR. Improved mechanical properties showed in order of SB, CQ, and MB in the tensile test results. For the blends with MPP and MNR as the compatibilizers, final morphology and mechanical properties were improved due to the intermolecular interactions. For the PP/PU blends, the blends by CQ showed superior dispersion of PU phase to the blends by MB. As the MPP and HPP were introduced in the blends, the sizes of dispersed PU phase in PP matrix were decreased and the domain showed better dispersion in the SEM observation. Mechanical properties, thermal stabilities, and surface property of the blends were also improved. The blends with MPP showed better tensile strength, impact strength, and surface free energy due to the interfacial adhesion effect than the blends with HPP. The latter showed better dispersion of PU phase at the low content of a compatibilizer and thermal stability compared to the former. From the above results, it was concluded that compositional quenching process could be used not only in plastic recycling by selective dissolution process but also in preparation of polymer-polymer blends with improved properties caused by controlling the phase separation behaviors. By introducing the compatibilizers in the blends, PP/Rubber blends could show improved properties due to the combined effect of controlled phase separation in the compositional quenching and the intermoleculr interlocking at the surfaces of PP and rubber particles.
