(A) Comparative Study on Oriental Medicine Terminology of South and Noth Korea : Focusing on 『HyangYakGipSungBang(鄕藥集成方)』원문보기

The purpose of this study is to perform comparative analysis on oriental medicine terminology based on 'HyangYakGipSungBang' translated by each South and North Korea and to provide fundamental information on its unitary work after unification of South and North Korea with identifying their corresponding terms.
For this study, literature study was performed to investigate bibliographical value of original text of 'HyangYakGipSungBang'. Then characteristics of compilation of both areas were observed focusing on their Korean translation books.
In addition, oriental medicine terminology used between South and North Korea were compared and analyzed focusing on category of acupuncture and name of disease, symptom, name of herbs, prescription, and measurement as characteristics of oriental medicine book.
Dividing it into each category, the results of this study is as follow;
First, in acupuncture category, South and North Korea all use terms that stem from Chinese character. And South Korea reads letter '수' as /su:/, North reads it as /yu:/.
Second, in name of disease category, while South Korea uses terms that stem from Chinese character, North Korea paraphrases it into purely Korean in understandable way.
Third, in symptom category, both paraphrase terms that stem from Chinese character into purely Korean in understandable way. Specifically, this tendency is stronger in North Korea. And North Korea uses unfamiliar terms which can not be found in South Korea.
Fourth, in prescription category, South Korea uses terms that stem from Chinese character but North Korea paraphrases it into purely Korean in understandable way. And both use terms that stem from Chinese character but they are different.
Fifth, in name of herbs category, North Korea excludes human part(人部) and classifies its style of description into 4 variety. there is difference of term due to disagreement of its own Chinese character in original text or disagreement of reading of same Chinese character in case that includes name of herbs that stem from Chinese character. Additionally in case that they including native name(鄕名) or purely Korean term, North Korea is more easi -er to understand than South Korea.
Finally, in measurement category, North Korea uses purely Korean term and expresses a certain term as different way according to type of herbs. Moreover, South and North Korea use different metric system in aspect of unit of weight.
In Conclusion, results of analysis on above difference in each category are like followings;
First, the reasons why term used is different in case of oriental medicine terminology that stem from Chinese character are caused by 2 factors.
One is due to disagreement of its own Chinese character in original text. Also Chinese character possesses phonetic value of over 2 kinds and phonetic value of Chinese style, although written same Chinese character in original text.
Second, while South Korea uses terms that stem from Chinese character, North Korea polishes them as purely Korean terms. Actually, North Korea replaces terms that stem from Chinese character to purely Korean terms through 'Polishing Language' campaign and promotes dialect as Cultural Language.
As a result, North Korea corrected oriental medicine terminology composed by Chinese character into purely Korean term compulsively, which causes unfamiliar usage to South Korea to be used.
Finally, the difference of orthography in both areas produces difference of oriental medicine terminology.
