Korean shamanism is the core of the traditional folk religion. It has had a great effect upon the formation of Korean mind, and its magical power remains unabated even today. It can be divided into two basic types, namely Gangsin-mu(spiritual shaman) and Seseup-mu(hereditary shaman). The purpose of this study is to survey the system of the Korean Gangsin-mu shaman's costume and its formative character and to fine out the traditional follow patterns of government officials' attires and court dresses meaning of it. Shaman's ritual costumes and their wearing methods and decorations are symbolized variety meanings. This study analyzes the difffrence between original shaman's costume and modern shaman's ones. It produces the point of common characters and different one. For my research of this goal, I largely used books, visited museums to examine shaman's costume, and participated in performing shaman's rituals. The shaman's performing rituals reflected the kind of costume as a service for the deity as well as time, goal, and scale. But their wearing Method is the same definite basic style. For example, covered costume(pyo-ui) takes Won-sam with hwa-kwan(flower crown), take Chang-sam(buddhist monk's clothes) with Go-kal(monk's cap), take Dong-da-liwith Bung-kea-jee(cap), take Cheal-lik with hung-lip(black cap) like the wearing method of traditional Korean costumes. In detail, Cheal-lik that wore shaman's costume during Dae-geari, Koo-lung-geori rituals wore as Yung-bok in Chosun dynasty, during war wore Kongbok. This Cheal-lik shaman's costume symbolized General Choi Young or gods of dead high official members, Chang-sam that wore shaman's costume during Jae-suk-geori. Chil-sung-geori rituals symbolized the god of birth control. Won-sam that wore shaman's costume during Sung-cho-geori symbolized the god of protection of house and home. This won-sam was worn by queen and princess in royal palace riginally. Mong-doo-ri wore shaman's costume during Man-shin-mal-myung-geori rituals worn symbolized dead shaman. Dong-da-li and Cheal-lik that wore shaman's costume during Byul-sung-geori. shin-jang-geori symbolized soul of a dead military officer. The overall shape of variety 'Po's in modern times are similar to the traditional ones, but they differ greatly in size, detail color, and ornamental design. My research examined the differences between the traditional and modern Po of shaman attires, and also investigate the transformation of their shapes. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The sleeves of the modern shaman's costume differ greatly to those of the traditional one. The wide sleeves make the width of the clothes broader. It is believed that the width and length of the sleeves are aimed at showing off the authority and dignity of the gods. The sleeves have slits in the armholes, which can allow the hands to be drawn out easily. In addition, the knot buttons are used in the modern costumes. Both sleeves and buttons are based on difffrent formation skills from those of the traditional costumes. They are considered to have been changed for the visual effects while spiritual rituals were being performed and for the easy of movement as well. 2. Modern shaman's costume used adornment and figure skill is more brilliant than traditional ones. The color of shaman's costume originates from five colors(blue, white, red, green and yellow). These colors used respectively in the old days were related to the traditional concepts. The colors of the shaman's costume indicates the rank differences in the order of yellow Mong-doo-li, green Won-sam, red Cheal-lik, blue Cheal-lik. Qae-ja, white Chang-sam. The orders are determined by the gods. The color of the shaman's costumes are a positive expression of divine power and shows the shaman's incantatory ability. This change mean a more accentuated visual effect than incantatory meaning. Another reason for color change is also the shaman's costume material. A kind of constituent element uses synthetic fiber in modern times. 3. On the kinds of Po in the shaman's performing ritual, the modern shaman's costume wored red Cheal-likk but in the original wore deep blue Cheal-lik in Dae-gam-geori. Do-dang-geori. and Koo-lung-geori as well as Sung-san-geori. The Cho-sang-geori ritual in the Chosun dynasty wore So-chang-ui and plain clothes. But in the modern times there is variety without coordination. The modern shaman costumes are similar to the traditional ones in overall shape, but details have great differences. The shaman's costume have been developed through imitation and remodelling for the creation of spiritual, theatrical, and special atmosphere during the performance of the spiritual rituals.
