Recently, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development for the quantification of oxygen in chemical, clinical, environmental fields. Among these oxygen sensor, the amperometric method, which is based on the electro-reduction of oxygen on a polarized cathode, is one of the most widely used. However, the method has the instability of the electrode surface by contaminants, the consumption of oxygen, and relatively long response time. Therefore, many efforts have been made in developing optical sensor because these optical sensors have advantages, such as no oxygen consumption and no requirement for a reference electrode. One of the most popular methods is based on photo-luminescent(PL) quenching of organic dyes spread in polymers, where the PL intensity varies as a function of the oxygen concentration, however, there are problems of bulky fabrication and of difficulty in the process. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to report a noble an optical oxygen sensor, which works on the principle of luminescence quenching by oxygen, fabricated using a channel optical waveguide formed by ion exchanging method and to characterize its sensing performance. Ion exchanging process was performed to substitute Ag^+ for Na^+ by immersing a patterned, 8 ㎛ in size, phosphate glass into a jig for 20 minutes at 250℃. Plantium octaethylporphyrin(Pt-OEP), selected as an oxygen quenchable material, was partially coated on a channel optical waveguide coupled to a single mode optical fiber, and then it was placed in a sensing cell fabricated in this study. The sensing performances of the sensor were studied by measuring the PL intensity of Pt-OEP excited by a green laser beam(532nm). It was observed that the PL intensity decreases as the oxygen concentration increases. The Stern-Volmer of the sensor shows linearity in the oxygen concentration range between 0 % and 20 %. Response time and recovery time were measured to be 100 sec and 80 sec, respectively. These results show the potential for developing an optical oxygen gas sensor using a channel optical waveguide.
