To interpret dispersion stability of α-Fe₂O₃ particle in terms of interfacial chemical properties, particle suspending power, anionic and nonionic surfactant of adsorption of to particle and ζ-potential of α-Fe₂O₃ particle were investigated as funtions of mixed ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant and ionic strength. Interfacial chemical properties was separated to interfacial electrical condition based on ζ-potential of particle and interaction energy between particles and steric stability effect formed by adsorption of surfactant to particle. α-Fe₂O₃ particle was used as model of particulate soil. To estimate dispersion stability of α-Fe₂O₃ particle, suspending power and particle size were examined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and light scattering using the polarization ratio method, respectively. ζ-potential of α-Fe₂O₃ particle was measured by microelectrophresis and interaction energy between particles based on ζ-potential of particle was calculated using Verwey-Overbeek theory. And adsorption of anionic and nonionic surfactant to particle were examined by spectrophotometer analysis of Abbott method and HPLC analysis, respectively. Dispersion stability of particle in anionic/nonionic surfactant mixed solution system was best at 0.1% surfactant concentration and at 1×10 ̄³ ionic strength. The effect of electrolytes was different, suspending power were relatively high with basic salt and were low with neutral salt. Generally the effect of mixed ratio on dispersion stability of particle was some different. But anionic and nonionic mixed surfactant solution showed good dispersion stability than single surfactant solution regardless of solution condition. Also, there is different according to condition of solution, but generally suspending power of particle increased with decreasing the particle size governed aggregation of dispersed particles. Hence the suspending power was inversely related to the particle size. And (-)ζ-potential of α-Fe₂O₃ particle and interaction energy between particles in anionic /nonionic mixed surfactant solution increased with increasing dispersion stability of particle regardless of mixed ratio of ionic surfactant and condition of solution, Therefore, dispersion stability of particle was well related with the interfacial electricical condition. Usually, the adsorption of surfactant to particle was much in mixed surfactant solution than single surfactant solution. And the adsorption of surfactant of anionic surfactant was mainly influenced by concentration of surfactant, the adsorption of surfactant of nonionic surfactant was affected by ionic strength of electrolyte. But relation with the adsorption of surfactant and dispersion stability of particle was low.
