The purpose of this study was to analyze kinematic variables of a Mae-ukemi (front breakfall) motion through three-dimensional image analysis with five rank-holders with over 2 years' career (the second or third rank) in judo in order to find out its kinematic features. The kinematic variables include temporal, posture, center of gravity, and distance variables the mean values and the standard deviations for each variable were obtained to analyze kinematic variables of a Mae-ukemi in judo. From the data analysis and discussion, the following conclusions were drawn 1) Temporal variables : The total time elapsed (TE) for a Mae-ukemi (front breakfall) was 1.36?.17 seconds on the average: TE during the 3rd ukemi phase was the longest (0.60 sec: 44%), followed by that during the 1st jumping phase (0.43 sec: 32%) and that during the 2nd aerial phase (0.32 sec: 24%) in order. Among the bodily regions touching the mat during a fall, the shocks were alleviated in feet, hands, and elbows in order. 2) Posture variables : The angles of wrists during RBU position were extended from the just before UP position and flexed from in the RAU position, and there was a difference in the displacement between the angles of the right and left wrists. The angles of elbows were flexed in the ready position from in the RAU position. The angles of ankles were flexed from the ready position to that of reaction, extended from the jumping position to the changing, and flexed both in the posture just before RAU position and in that just in the RAU position. 3) Center of Gravity variables : The up-and-down central movement displacement was located at the height of 32.1cm from the mat in the RBU position and at 19.8 cm on the average in the RAU position. 4) Distance Variables : The distance height between the mat and shoulders in the RBU position (33.1--32.2cm) to in the UP position (19.2-- 18.3cm) and in the RAU position (21.8-20.5cm). while that height between the mat and hips in the RBU position (47.5 48.Ocm) to in the UP position (22.6-23.4cm), and in the RAU position (30.1--30.6cm).
