Identification of nursing interventions in the operating room using the Perioperative Nursing Data Set(PNDS)원문보기

Nursing practice is a major component of health care. Yet, it remains undervalued and essentially invisible because little standardized languages exist to substantiate the influence of nurses on patient outcomes. An automated, standardized method of naming what operating room nurses do is needed to clarify the value, outcomes, quality, and cost-efficiency of professional perioperative nursing services. This study was attempt to estimate the importance and performance rate of nursing interventions performed by operating room nurses using the Perioperative Nursing Data Set. The data were collected from 88 operating room nurses, from August 1 to October 25, 2002 using Perioperative Nursing Data Set developed by AORN, from 2 university hospitals in Gwang-ju and 2 general hospitals in Seoul. PNDS was translated into Korean. Data were analyzed with SPSS program. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) In the importance of the nursing interventions, importance mean score of the 'Implements aseptic technique' intervention was 4.97 out of 5, and Performs required counts', 'Use supplies and equipment within safe parameters', 'Confirms identity before the operative or invasive procedure' had each importance score of 4.94, 4.88, and 4.72 respectively. 2) In the performance rate of the nursing interventions, performance mean score of the 'Implements aseptic technique' intervention was 4.94 out of 5, and 'Performs required counts', 'Use supplies and equipment within safe parameters', 'Implements protective measures to prevent injury due to electrical sources' had each importance score of 4.92, 4.88, and 4.61 respectively. 3) The nursing interventions responded importantly by more than 50% operating room nurses, and performed at least once a day were 38 in 127 nursing interventions. 4) The importance of the nursing intervention categories were the Physical injury prevention, Physiological protection, Patient rights, Patient centered care and Knowledge: Perioperative experience in rank. 5) The performance rate of the nursing intervention categories were the Physical injury prevention, Patient rights, Physiological protection, Patient centered care and Knowledge: Perioperative experience in rank. In conclusion, the operating room nurses consider interventions of the physical injury prevention and the patient centered care very importantly, but the performance rate of the patient centered care is low. It shows that education course of patient centered care is more emphasized.
