Eating Disorder is extremely concerned about one's weight and the body figure and they also show abnormal dietary behavior. Binge eating in the eating disorder means that the one eats much more than most people in a similar situation and fixed time and that the one loses the regulating ability. Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by a repeated pattern of uncontrolled episodic binge eating followed by negative mood and self-blame thoughts. This symptoms is usually accompanied by severe restrictive dieting, self-induced vomiting, and laxative use for weight control. The body figure and the weight are the important factors for bulimia nervosa. Also they are associated with psychological problems such as low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, negative affect like depression and anxiety. There is often, but not always, a history of an earlier episode of anorexia nervosa, the interval ranging from a few months to several years. There have been many methods of treatment researches, cognitive behavioral therapy has been known to be the most effective method among psychological and behavioral therapies. Because the intervention has improved the binge eating behaviors and cognitive distortion like negative self-blame thoughts about body image and self-awareness. The purpose of this study was to test effect of cognitive-behavioral group therapy on improving the frequency of binging and purging, eating attitude, self-esteem, and depression. The subjects were 12 women who showed over 88 score on the BULIT-R(bu1imia test revised) to identify those with bulimia nervosa among binge eaters. 8 sessions of cognitive-behavioral group therapy were provided to each group composed of 5-7 binge eaters. All subjects completed the BULIT-R, EAT(eating attitudes test), Rosenberg self-esteem scale, self efficacy scale, MPS(multidimensiona1 perfectionism scale), impulsivity scale, BDI(Beck depression inventory), STAI(state trait anxiety inventory), PANAS(positive and negative affect schedule), Silhouette body image test-R, body-esteem scale, self-consciousness scale to pre-and post intervention, and recorded food daily. Cognitive behavioral therapy programs in this study was treated with modified Fairburn's cognitive behavior therapy model. Paired t-test and MANOVA was used for the comparison of binging eating behaviors, self-report questionnaires in before treatment, after treatment and follow-up(6 months after treatment). As results, binge eating group reported the much more binge eating behavior, weight, dissatisfaction of body Image, low body-esteem than normal control group. The participants of cognitive-behavioral group therapy reported significant improvement on frequency of binging eating behaviors and purging, depression, anxiety, self-consciousness, negative affect after the cognitive behavioral group therapy than before the therapy. Also participants reported improvement on self-body perception after the therapy. Frequency of binging eating behaviors per week showed a general trend of decline from the beginning to the end of the treatment. Accordingly the results of this study suggest that cognitive-behavioral group therapy may be an effective initial approach for the treatment of binge eating. Future research showed a significant improvement in follow-up evaluation.
