(An) analysis of the questions on pregnancy and contraception raised in Internet counseling on adolescent sexuality : with special reference to the e-mail counseling conducted at an Internet counseling web site(www.ahsex.org)원문보기

This study intends to explore viable ways of Internet counseling on adolescent sexuality and to provide basic data to devise effective measures for the prevention of sexual problems. This is to be done not only by analyzing the contents of the questions that the users of Internet counseling have raised, but by evaluating the extent to which the counselors' answers coincide with the counselees' questions. This study is based upon an analysis of the six categories relating to pregnancy and contraception--(1) the level of sexual knowledge(recognition) that the counselee has, (2) the emotional response of the counselee after having sex, (3) the question as to whether the decision to engage in a sexual intercourse is made voluntarily or not, (4) the way the counselee sees himself or herself after intercourse, (5) the way the counselee sees his or her sexual partner after intercourse, and (6) the incidence of sexual experience. The samples for this research are 1,687 questions about pregnancy and contraception that were raised by the counselees in the Internet counseling (www.ahsex.org) between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2002. In addition, one hundred answers that the counselors made are also analyzed to determine to what extent they coincide with the counselees' reactions. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, those who most frequently resorted to counseling were senior high schoolers, followed by college students. Junior high school students were the least frequent users. More female students used the counseling system than their male counterparts. Among the male users, a higher percentage of the college students sought counseling than the high schoolers did, and this means that the more educated a male student is, the more likely he is to be concerned and worried about the possibility of pregnancy of his sex partner. Second, the analysis of the sexual knowledge of the counselees regarding the purchase of the pregnancy test kit and its usage, methods of abortion, and contraceptive devices shows that they were greatly worried about pregnancy after having sex, but that they usually had done almost nothing to avoid pregnancy beforehand. Meanwhile, more than a half of the counselees confessed that they had experienced `anxiety, fear and painful life', and they seem to have gone through a very unstable emotional stage, making it very difficult for them to enjoy a normal life. And that many a counselee felt `shame, regret and foolishness' after sex means adolescents tended to have a very poor self-image following sexual experiences. On the other hand counselees expressed a concern about, rather than a grudge against, their sex partners, and the tendency to care about the partner was strongest among the college students. In the area of the incidence of sexual experience, those who had sex twice and more were more than double the number of those who had sex only once. This, in conjunction with the low level of their sexual knowledge, means that despite more sexual experiences a majority of them still ignored to adopt contraceptive devices, and thereby to be worried about pregnancy afterwards. Sex education about the importance of contraception and its concrete methods and devices, therefore, is in urgent need. Third, the analysis of the conselors' responses points to a high degree of coincidence between the counselors and counselees only in the area of knowledge (recognition) about pregnancy and contraception. In the other categories the degree of coincidence is found low. This is thought to have resulted from the fact that Internet counseling tends to concentrate on cognitive answers and factual knowledge, and therefore it seems quite necessary in the future that the counselor should give pertinent responses and answers to counselee's emotional problems and low self-image. The data used for analysis in this study would be useful in understanding sexual problems and difficulties expressed by adolescents in Internet counseling, and in finding out ways to help those who in need of guidance and assistance. This study could also be helpful in developing more practical and effective sex education programs since it had a firmer understanding of what many adolescents are currently experiencing in their sexual life.
