Human bone consists of mineral, organic materials and water with the composition ratio of 45%, 35% and 20%, respectively. And the major portion of the mineral is hydroxyapatite, (Ca_(10)(PO_(4))6(OH)_(2)). Hydoryxapatite has drawn interest as a bone implant material since major component of biological tissues such as bone, teeth and invertebrate skeletons are composed of hydroxyapatite. Ca, P and OH sites of hydorxyapatite in human body are substituted with other various ions (For examples, Ca site: Mg^(2+), Na^(2+), Ba^(2+) etc, PO_(4) site: CO_(3)^(2-), HPO_(4)^(2-), SO_(4)^(2-) etc and OH site: CO_(3)^(2-), S^(2-), F^(-), Cl^(-) etc). The substitutions have an effect to mechanical properties and bioactivities of hydroxyapatite. Incorporation of ions into hydroxyapatite structure has been studied with the purpose of producing more similar artificial bone to human bone or improving the mechanical properties and bioactivities. In the studies of Carlise, Kokubo, Bonfield and Schwarz, silicon ions are verified to effective in new bone formation. And it is known that magnesium is favorable to form apatite crystal and to maintain the crystallinity of hydroxyapatite. Several attempts have been made to prepare Si, Mg individually substituted hydroxyapatite or Si (or Mg) and carbonate, fluoride co-substituted hydroxyapatite have been studied by many researchers. In this study, silicon and magnesium co-substituted hydroxyapatites have been prepared to obtain improved both bioactivity and mechanical properties. Silicon and Magnesium substituted hydroxyapatites were synthesized with tetraethyl orthsilicate(TEOS) and Mg(OH)2 as starting materials, and chemical compositions were characterized by ICP. From FT-IR and XRD data, it is confirmed that Si, Mg co-substituted hydroxyapatites have been prepared without revealing of extra phases related to silicon and magnesium oxide or other calcium phosphate species. Sintering behavior of these materials was investigated by SEM and TEM. Si, Mg co-substituted hydroxyapatite of up to 2wt% of Si and 1.5wt % for Mg keep its original structures intact for sintering temperatures of up to 1200oC. And the addition of Mg raises the sintering temperature and improves the thermal stability of hydroxyapatite toward higher sintering temperature.
