The term acoustic emission (AE) is used to describe both a technique and the
phenomenon upon which the technique is based. The acoustic emission phenomenon is
defined as the elastic wave generated by the release of energy internally stored in a structure Acoustic emission is a relatively new non-destructive testing (NDT)
technique, which has been widely used for materials testing or finding flaws and cracks in materials. Recently it has been demonstrated that it has potential for chemical process monitoring, such as crystallisation, solvation, phase transitions, corrosion, pyrolysis, flame reactions, bubble formation and cavitation. The digital signal processor (DSP: TMS320C30 by Texas Instruments) based Acoustic-Analyser software system has been developed for on-line process monitoring. Two sets of solid particle detection experiments, small and large scale experiments, have been conducted to demonstrate the ability of the DSP-based AE monitoring system in terms of real-time processing and sophisticated classification capability. It has been shown from the experiments that the DSP-based AE monitoring system can provide a compact, cost effective and powerful tool for monitoring industrial chemical processes. In addition, conventional pattern recognition algorithms and artificial neural network algorithms have been shown to provide intelligent classification capability for complex acoustic emission signals.
