(A) Study on the Yo-Sun Chup-Ri in the late period of Koryo Dynasty : Focused on the Reappearance of Remains Restoration of Haeinsa원문보기

The primary materials in the study of garments to reflect society and culture at that time, are existing remains. Because these materials are corroded on the characteristic of them as times go by, People usually study about the secondary materials such as literatures or pictures for it. Yo-Sun Chup-Ri, one of the positive Buddhist costume remains of Haein-sa is actually an important data to show the characteristic of the Koryo's dresses. By the way, in the process of registering Yo-Sun Chup-Ri as cultural property in 2003, it was found the reproduction of this remain and literatures about it differed from the one which it was. As a result of the reinvestigation, wrong parts related to it was reaffirmed. So this study suggests the way that the systematic making process of this remain is restored and reproduced. The results are as follows. First, comparing and investigating Chup-Ri and Yo-sun Chup-Ri from the view of the literatures and pictures of China and Korea, 1) The origin of Chup-Ri and Yo-Sun Chup-Ri in Korea is not certain. However, it derived from Sim-ui, Zilson and Sun O of Chinese clothes on their forms and came from Beokjukporyu of Yuan period on records. We were able to infer Yo-Sun Chup-Ri from BeonSun 0 form of Yuan and Ming. 2) In China, names, meanings, types, usages and wearing ranges of Chup-Ri and Yo-Sun Chup-Ri diversely changed as times went by. In Korea Chup-Ri diversely changed as it did in China, but the name of Yo-Sun Chup-Ri didn't. 3) In China, the forms of Yo-Sun Chup-Ri's collars were as follows: SaRyung, KokRyung and BangRyung. However, in Korea there was only JikRyung in the form of collar on Yo-Sun Chup-Ri and Dongjung appeared. The characteristic of making Yo-Sun Chup-Ri sleeves was the form of Yo-Sun Chup Ri with both sleeves and the one with detachment and attachment of one-side sleeve or both sleeves. Opposite fold and single fold were the forms of skirt fold. 4) In both countries, diverse cloths were used according to seasons and the forms of sewing were cotton cloth, layered cloth and single cloth. The most color of the costumes were red. There were also blue color and yellow one, etc on them. 5) In both countries, making the method of Yo-Sun mentioned in records was folding, rolling, twisting, braiding or weaving it by using a thin line(string) and putting it over the waist part of clothes by preparing the material of the large section of cloth or thread separately. The color of Yo-Sun was the same as the one of background color. The number of line in Yo-Sun was from 3 to 340 in maximum. In both countries, Yo-Sun was usually used regardless of social positions, sex, aged and youth in wearing range. Second, investigating and analysing the literatures and reappeared products related to Yo-Sun Chup-Ri. 1) They prepared the material of the large section of cloth(the cloth similar to it) separately in making Yo-Sun, folded it by using narrow string which is 0.5cm in width and put it over the waist part of clothes. But the literatures related to Yo-sun said, "They didn't apply line to cloth separately in making Yo-Sun. In making Yo-Sun, they folded the material of the large section of cloth into the form of tuck as it is and did the Ondangchim smoothly in two lines up and down tuck." 2) They applied lining of thin silk to the inside of Yo-Sun and sewed it three-fold. But the literatures said, "They applied smooth thin silk to it and hemmed it so that there might not be sewing stitch marks which were showed by means of doing "OndangChim" in the part of inside Yo-Sun parts of the large section of cloth." In conclusion, there were mistaken records in Yo-Sun-related literatures, the reproduction of Yo-Sun was made according to them and it was made differently from this remain. Third, the results of investigation, study and analysis of Yo-Sun Chup-Ri are as follows, 1) We can infer that Yo-Sun Chup-Ri, was the cloth of Koryo Era formed between 1326 and 1384, KyeChupYeondae by probation, special forms in a person's name, government service and construction of calligraphies which were written in cloth and by comparison with other remains considered. 2) The material of this remain is smooth ramie cloth and the color of it is pleochroic halo. The collar of it is a doubled collar, which is the type of JikRyung and wooden board and the neckband sewed in unlined garments of it is 3 pieces separation type. They used the material cloth, applied it to the waist part of it and made Yo-Sun. In Yo-Sun parts, they applied lining to it and did the "OndangChim" in three-fold. Skirt was 8 widths in total and 2cm in opposite folds. Fourth, we restored and reproduced this remain and proved and presented the making process of it, on the basis of inspection results of mistakes in sewing methods in Yo-Sun Chup-Ri, which is a remain now. The main sewings of restoration and reproduction of it were Running Stitch, Hemming, banDangChim, OndangChim and Ssamsol.
