The purpose of this study lay in comparing and analyzing the viewpoints toward the handicapped characters in movies. The movies were divided into Korean and American movies, based on the production regions providing socio-cultural background to movies. The changes in attitude and viewpoints toward the handicapped were sought out through the review of the existing problems and the desire for the fuller society where the handicapped could live and learn without any social discrimination was presented. The following were the study topics of the paper : First, is there any difference between Korean movies and American movies in terms of handicapped characters' individual traits ? Second, is there any difference between Korean movies and American movies in terms of handicapped characters' self-consciousness ? Third, is there any difference between Korean movies and American movies in terms of people's viewpoints toward the handicapped characters? The subjects of this study were 24 Korean movies and 24 American movies where the handicapped appeared. The viewpoints toward the handicapped characters revealed in Korean and American movies was divided into three categories for the purpose of comparison and analysis : Handicapped characters' individual traits ; handicapped characters' self-consciousness ; people's viewpoints toward the handicapped characters. SPSS 10.0, a statistical analysis program, was used for the treatment of the data collected in the study and frequency and percentage were extracted for subcategories and production regions. The results of the study on the viewpoints toward the handicapped characters in movies can be summarized as follows ; First, the individual traits of the handicapped characters in the Korean and American movies were quite similar, although small difference was discovered in the aspect of sex, occupation, and parts of disability. In most of the movies studied, the handicapped were portrayed as inferior and weaker ones of the society. Second, the difference in the self-consciousness of the handicapped characters in the Korean and American movies was quite noticeable. Compared with the American characters, the Korean characters showed more of the negative self-consciousness than the positive self-consciousness. However, on the whole, it was obvious that the self-consciousness of the handicapped characters leaned toward the negative side. Third, people's viewpoints toward the handicapped characters did not show much regional difference. Generally, people's viewpoints toward the handicapped characters was somewhat negative.
