This study was designed to identify antagonist microorganisms that can be used to replace wood fungicide controlling wood sapstain fungi. Two steps were taken to achieve the objective: 1) collect various microorganisms that may prevent wood sapstain by controlling the activity of wood sapstain fungi and 2) examine the collected microorganisms for the antagonist and inhibitive effectiveness There were 29 actinomycetes identified at the Bukhan Mt. National Forest, represented by Streptomyces sp. (86.2%), Kitasatosporia sp. (10.3%) and Micromonospora sp. (3.4%). The physiological and biochemical analysis of the strains indicated that the stains of streptomyces genus may not be the same. Among the strains identified from 29 actinomycetes, 11 strains that do not show red color and show a strong potential for natural enemy against wood sapstain fungi were used to examine the antagonist and inhibitive effectiveness of wood sapstain fungi. Pairing culture was used to test the effectiveness of microorganisms in preventing wood discoloration caused by wood sapstain fungi. For bacteria, Arthrobacter sp. was shown to be effective in preventing wood discoloration by controlling the activity of wood sapstain fungi. Yeasts such as Candida geochares, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were effective of controlling the activity of Aureobasidium pullulan and Ophiostoma piliferum. Among actinomycetes collected from soils, effective control of wood sapstain fungi activity was also observed from seven strains that belong to Streptomyces sp. Most strains were not effective in controlling of wood sapstain fungi activity when microorganisms were applied into wood blocks. However, the mycelium color of the sapstain fungi applied with potential antagonistic microorganisms became lighter, compared to the one that was not applied with any antagonistic microorganisms. There was an inconsistency of the outcomes between pairing culture and wood block test, requiring other methods to evaluate the results from this study.
