The purpose of this study is to explore Karl Barth's theory of the trinity and to evaluate its modern significance. Karl Barth was considered one of the best theologians since John Calvin. In order to study his theory of the trinity, two questions are to be considered. The first question is, "Is Barth's theory of the trinity the most important subject in his Church Dogmatics?" Based on the affirmative answer, this thesis shall suggest that Barth's church dogmatics have a trinitarian structure and his theological method seems to have a trinitarian direction. The second question is, "Is his theory of the trinity a result of pure speculative thought?" or "Does his trinity come from deep meditation and understanding of the Bible itself? This thesis shall suggest that Barth's theory of the trinity is not a result of pure speculation but a fruit from his church ministry, preaching and the hard scholarship. These will be exposed through this study. Barth published Church Dogmatics in 1932. In this book, he begins to explore the theory of the trinity in his revelation part. According to him, the doctrine of the trinity is what basically distinguishes the Christian doctrine of God as Christian, and therefore what already distinguishes the Christian concept of revelation as Christian, in contrast to all other possible doctrines of God or concepts of revelation. As R. D. Williams says, “Bath is a unique theologian to suggest trinity as a ground for theology.” At any rate Barth's theory of the trinity attracts the following scholarship. Therefore, this study will suggest that Barth's theory of the trinity consists of a major assumption for the structure and method for his church dogmatics. This study will be progressed in considerating the triune God of Church Dogmatics. Lee Jang Sik's, Kim Gyun Jin's and Lee Jong Sung's studying on Barth's trinity will be considered. In the chapter Ⅱ, the relation with 'trinity and revelation' will be studied. Barth puts the doctrine of the trinity at the head of all dogmatics. Barth criticizes Vestigium Trinitatis. In the chapter Ⅲ, there are a unity in trinity and a trinity in unity. Also the meaning of trinity will be defined. In the chapter Ⅳ, the modes of being of God in terms of God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit will be explored. In the chapter Ⅴ, the critical approach of Barth's theory of the trinity will be conducted. Finally, the chapter Ⅵ sums the findings and the critical assesments for Barth's theory of the trinity will be arranged.
