The main purpose of this study is to analyze various semantic extensions of basic English verbs such as have, get, take and make through the prototype meanings of each verb. These verbs have a relatively high frequency of use. This study consists of five chapters. The introductory chapter is followed by a chapter describing the theoretical background and definition of polysemy and surveying a prototype model of cognitive grammar and Langaker's web model. The third chapter analyzes prototype meanings and semantic extensions of these basic verbs from the dictionary. The fourth chapter tries to apply the results of this study to research example sentences and the frequency of these verbs in the textbooks. On the basis of these results, the students' recognition of basic verbs is determined by a test. The last chapter summarizes the study and suggests some implications for education. Results show a tendency of textbooks to categorize basic verbs equally. In the textbooks the prototype meaning appears as follows: have 48%, get 18.8%, take 6,6% and make 44.7%. On the basis of example sentences and categories of these verbs in the textbooks, recognition of basic verbs was investigated using a test. The subjects of this study consist of 100 third grade students from a middle school in Busan. The students' answers were analyzed and discussed. Students answered correctly 56% of the time for the verb have, 34% for get, 13% for take and 64% for make. The results show that not only don't they have semantic extensions of these verbs in spite of having some prototype meanings of have and make but they also don't have any prototype meanings of verbs like get and take. Based on these findings, the following suggestions can be made. First, when teaching a word, teachers have to present the proper prototype meanings of the word. In addition they have to promote meaning webs using the prototype of the meanings. Second, leaners have to determine the meanings of words through the context and teachers have the responsibility to teach them how to do so. Third, both teachers and learners should have an open mind about English culture so as to understand it. And teachers can help them learn prototype meanings of words through the use of realia such as visual materials, newspapers, movies and pictures.
