Recently, contemporary culture is much ascribe to myths. Our general perception about myths is that a myth is a visionary and mysterious product of the imagination from the ancients. Though it looks apparently true, we come to know that it is not just an enumeration of imaginations when we look at it closer. Since a myth is always participating in the real, it is a true story and real part of the history. This study, started from finding the contemporary meaning of myth, is devoted to trying to understand myths which are scatter over the contemporary culture, through the Indian myths and re-interpreting the meaning of symbols of characters in the Indian myths and their costume as a new contemporary meaning, applying this image into the design. Also by studying the oriental trend which is the main trend all over the world and symbols of India myth which is the main resource of the trend, this study is focused on finding the true image of myths in the times with offering a motif to the fashion design regarded as an art work, thus presenting instructions and opportunities of the development of contemporary fashion design. The methods and the contents of this research are studying the historical backgrounds of India and its culture on the basis of history books and ethnics-related books, and studying the Indian myths on the basis of ancient books and epos, for better historical consideration on Indian race and society and correct understanding of the Indian myths. Also the research on the oriental trend in the times and contemporary function of myths have been carried out through the analysis of myths reflected symbols of the Indian myths. This study also classifies the conscience of Indian gods and their roles in the myths and presents the symbols of the India myths as temperance, protection and sensuality. Six art works have been made with applying the various motifs drawn from the analysis of symbols of the Indian myths in contemporary fashion design expressed in contemporary fashion design and the works of contemporary designers to the design. The summary of the conclusion of this study is as follows. First, the theme of the Indian myths came form the characteristics of Indian gods. The analysis of the way the Indian myths represent the reality by the contemporary interpretation of the myths have led to the embodiment of the Indian myths which reflected our life, as art and culture are the major part of human life. Second, temperance, among the symbols of the Indian myths, is represented as loyalty to God by temperance and self-sacrificing spirit to have mature personality. Woven textile pattern using Indian traditional patterns and colors and simple, moderate and figurative line are used for expressing the symbols of temperance. Third, protection, among the symbols of the India myths, is represented as a god of war who safeguards the life and the prosperity, defeat the Devil and remove the obstacle. Fringe, rough cutting techniques and ethnic Indian worrier with metals are used to express the symbol. Fourth, sensuality, among the symbols of the India myths, is represented as prosperity, birth and enjoying love with carnal desire. Exposure of the body and the vivid color of Indian style are used to express sensuality. Even India and the Indian myth have become a major motif of the oriental trend all over the world and it is re-evaluated by various contemporary designers, however it is often misunderstood that Indian culture falls behind others due to the distorted views and some scholars. The efforts to find the root of the Indian culture and myths should be continued. Through the reflection on the symbols of the Indian myths which are the major cultural code in the times, this study is showing the way to find the true meaning of myths and offering a new motif to the fashion designers thus giving the opportunity to have a dream and cherish a hope to the contemporary.
