This study is designed to provide basic information on developing nursing intervention strategy based on the characteristics of different attachment behaviors of mothers of children with atopic dermatitis. The study introduces Q-methodology to identify and analyze mother's attachment behavior that establishes the most basic psychological environment for an infant with atopic dermatitis sand, at the same time, serves as a leading and important factor in developing attachment between child and mother. Q-population was organized through in depth interview with 12 mothers of children with atopic dermatitis and are 3 years old or under. A total of 50 Q-sample was selected after gathering opinions from professionals on randomly-selected statements. The researcher selected the final 50 statements that are believed to represent the most effectively the three attributes including, proximity, reciprocity and commitment of attachment behavior and the seven sub-dimensions. P-sample of 25 mothers was subject to Q-sorting. Nine-point criterion for classification is based on the mother's subjective recognition of consent. PC-QUANL program was used to analyze the above, which confirmed five different types of attachment behaviors in mothers of children with atopic dermatitis. Type Ⅰ :『The low committed empathetic』 A mother under Type Ⅰ expresses strong and positive emotion toward and engages in affectionate physical contact and active interaction with her child. However, she has relatively poor management and recognition of the severity of the child's progress and is less-committed. Nursing intervention for Type Ⅰ provides the mother with information on her child's atopic dermatitis so that she will have clear understanding of her child's status. The intervention encourages the mother to play an active role in the management of her child's illness. Type Ⅱ :『The highly committed & concerned』 A mother under Type Ⅱ feels sorry for her child. She is sacrificing, devoted and exerts significant effort to improve her child's status. However, the mother is insensitive to the child's basic requirements, behavioral changes, and cause and aggravating factors of atopic dermatitis. She is depressed, anxious and guilt-ridden, and lacks confidence in herself as a mother. Nursing intervention for type Ⅱ provides the mother with clear understanding of treatment for the disease, accurate information on her child's status and encourages the mother to be more sensitive to her child's requirements. The intervention should ease her anxiety and encourage her to have adequate and stable interaction that goes in line with the child's requirements. This, in turn, will boost the mother's confidence. Type Ⅲ :『The vicious circle of oversensitivity』 A mother under type Ⅲ is all attentive to her child's progress. She feels guilty for her negative emotions including hatred, anger, dissatisfaction, and shame towards the child. In addition, she feels helpless about her child's illness. The mother is overly permissive to the child, which serves as a means to compensate for her oversensitivity. Nursing intervention for type Ⅲ provides the mother with accurate information on the severity of her child's dermatitis and encourages the mother to acknowledge her oversensitivity. The intervention should contribute to the suspension of a viciouscircle of compensating attitudes, such as permissive upbringing and overly close attachment between child and mother, and basically encourage the mother to develop positive emotions towards her child. Type Ⅳ :『The positive interaction』 A mother under type Ⅳ is the most positive in evaluation of herself. She displays the least amount of helplessness and guilt from the fact that her child suffers from atopic dermatitis. She is sensitive to cause and aggravating factors of atopic dermatitis, and typical characteristics and behavioral changes of her child. In addition, she actively responds to her child's expression of affection and believes the child is the most secured and relaxed when he/she is with her. Type Ⅳ shows high level of proximity, reciprocity and commitment. Nursing intervention for type Ⅳ should help the mother to control her emotions, such as a gitation and disgust. Type Ⅴ :『The optimistic non-intervention』 A mother under type Ⅴ displays profound sense of rejection to her child's unfair skin. She prefers strong and stimulating contact, lacks proximity in sensitive acknowledgment of her child's requirements, and opts to maintain some distance with her child while emphasizing his/her independence. She is vaguely positive about the child's progress and assumes her role as a passive manager. The mother displays weak attachment behavior as a whole. Nursing intervention for type Ⅴ should introduce measures to maintain loving access to and interactivity with a child to secure stable attachment between child and mother, and provide the mother with accurate information on progress and management of atopic dermatitis. Such measure will encourage the mother to assume a more active role in caring for her child. The five types of attachment behaviors described above are classified based on level of commitment of a mother, her emotion towards her child, sensitiveness to the characteristics of the child's atopic dermatitis, and knowledge of contact method to ease itching. Findings of this study will serve as the basis for the development of nursing intervention strategy that takes into account the characteristics of different types of attachment behaviors of mothers. This, as a result, will help the mothers to exercise desirable attachment behavior towards their children with atopic dermatitis.
