In this study, the method were developed to measure BTEXs exposure level in the air as well as their metabolites of benzene and toluene via human urine. The workers on duty were surveyed as target cases, and the residents in Chuncheon which was in the suburban area were surveyed as comparative cases in this study. Actually, 31 workers in as target group and 33 residences as comparative group were engaged in this epidemiological study. 1) BTEXs exposure levels Individual exposure level to BTEXs, collected by active sampler method, appeared very higher in workplace than those in suburban area, and the differences were significant. The median levels of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene concentration at the work place were 40, 30, 50, 380 and 70 times higher than those of chemical concentration at suburban area, respectively. Benzene was known as a carcinogen, it's concentrations were 0.24∼20.57ppb at suburban area and 1.9∼653.7ppb at work place. these levels were not exceeded the OSHA(Occupational Safety and Health Administration) threshold value of 1ppm.. Toluene were 1.7∼57.7ppb at suburban area and 4.5∼5100.4ppb at work place. Ethyl benzene were 0.8∼13.5ppb at suburban area and 1.9∼2345.8ppb at work place. m,p-Xylene were 1.4∼9.3ppb at suburban area and 7.9∼29196.2ppb at work place. o-Xylene concentrations were 0.4∼13ppb at suburban area and 4.1∼3722.3ppb at work place. 2) Results of BTEXs metabolites Urinary t,t-MA was used as the indicator of the estimation of benzene exposure, while urinary HA was also used for the estimation of toluene exposure. The level of t,t-MA Metabolites product of benzene(t,t-MA) was not listed in this paper because it detected in only 4 participants among 64 total. The level of HA Metabolites product of toluene(HA) was not significant both in suburban and workplace area. The median concentration of HA in workers were 0.90925g/g_(creatinine), while those of residents were 1.67725g/g_(creatinine). The level of residents in respect of average concentration were higher than those of work group. Ambient toluene were correlated with HA when toluene exposure levels were over 100ppb level. The linear relationship between the exposure level and HA concentration was demonstrated. This indicated that HA could be re-examined and reviewed as the metabolic indicator of lower toluene exposure than 100ppb.
