This study aimed to find out the problems and new methods to improve the treatment efficiency of general filtration process that is used as turbidity remove process in water supply purification system. Investigation target filter bed was classified as rapid sand filter, high-speed coagulation settling filter and slow sand filter. From the results of trouble investigation for each filter bed, inadequate effective size or L/D ratio, media contamination , turbidity leakage in initial treated water, occurrence of sand boiling and mud balls were found out on rapid sand filter bed. In the case of rapid or high-speed coagulation settling filter bed, such as breakdown of water collecting facility, media contamination, backwashing badness, over road of treated water from the criteria were shown. And the slow filter bed had some troubles, such as shorten the packing depth of sand, inadequate relation between packed sand depth and filtering velocity, clogging of sand bed, inadequate removal of contaminated sand and its interval, and non facility of backwashing pipe line. To overcome the troubles of rapid filter bed, it was known that the below management should be carried out in filtration process. Adequate L/D ratio management which is based on regular monitoring of filter bed efficiency, improvement of backwashing efficiency, water quality management to treated water's turbidity below 0.5NTU. And introduction of the Composite Correction Program (CCP) are demanded in rapid filter bed. On the rapid or high-speed coagulation settler filter bed are need to manage such as increasing of backwashing efficiency, regular checking of the packed sand, turbidity monitoring of treated water. And setting up the backwashing pipe line, adequate control of packed sand depth and filtering velocity, and adequate removal or supplement the contaminated sand are demanded in slow filter bed.
