Dental impression materials should have adequate rheological properties to allow adequate mix and flow through mixing tip and allow penetration to every detail of the mouth. It should flow easily into the interproximal surfaces, sulcus areas, and sharp line angles, Moreover, after setting, it should have sufficient tear strength, elasticity, dimensional stability, accuracy, and adequate stain in compression property for respective clinical situations. This study investigated for the mechanical and rheological properties of commercially leading auto-mixing addition polymerization silicone rubber impression materials. Six types of low-viscosity (LV) additional silicone materials [Aquasil LVⓇ (Dentsply, USA), Bisico super-hydrophil S4Ⓡ (Bisico, Germany), CharmflexⓇ (Dentkist Inc., Korea), ExahiflexⓇ (GC Co., Japan), ExamixfineⓇ (GC Co., Japan), Provil NOVO fast-setⓇ (Heraeus kulzer, Germany)], and two types of medium-viscosity (MV) materials [Aquasil monophaseⓇ (Dentsply, USA), Honigum automix-monoⓇ (DMG, Germany)] were evaluated. Viscosities of base and catalyst pastes, viscosity changes with the elapsed time after mixing the two pastes, consistency, tensile strength, permanent deformation, strain in compression were evaluated for five replicate samples. For the evaluation of the shear thinning effects of the materials, the viscosity changes with the elapsed time after mixing were measured at rotor rotation speeds of 1 rpm and 10 rpm. The percentage changes of the values were evaluated for each samples at specific time after after mixing. The results were as follows: 1. The average viscosity values of Base paste/Catalyst paste for lov viscosity materials [Provil NOVO fast-set(26667/28000), Bisico S4(54667/70000), Examixfine(26000/91333), Aquasil LV(106000/64667), Charmflex(115333/71333), Exahiflex(221333/111333)] were lower than those of medium viscosity materials [Aquasil monophase(165000/ 213333), Honigum(304000/332000)]. Provil NOVO showed lowest value among LV materials, and base paste of Exahiflex showed even higher viscosity than those of MV Aquasil monophase. 2. The average consistency values of LV materials were in the order of Provil NOVO fast-set(39.80), Bisico S4(38.51), Examixfine(37.86), Charmflex(36.80), Aquasil LV(35.57), Exahiflex(31.78). Values of MV materials were 30.61 mm for Aquasil monophase and 29.39 mm for Honigum, and there were statistical significancy among mean values of the eight tested groups (p<0.05). 3. All the tested materials had shear thinning effect showing the decrease of viscosity as the viscosity measuring rotor speed changed from 1 rpm to 10 rpm during setting of the pastes. When comparing the viscosity reduction rates of the tested materials as the rotor speed increased when measured at 30 sec from the start of measuring, Charmflex (91.94%) and Provil NOVO fast-set (91.3%) showed great reduction in viscosity with the increase of rotor speed, which demonstrates the better shear thinning properties of those two materials. The trends were similar when measured at 60 sec from the start of measuring, On the other hand, Examixfine showed 27.3% of viscosity reduction rate at 30 sec demonstrating lesser shear thinning property among test materials. When measured at 23℃ condition, Charmflex and Provil NOVO fast-set showed rapid viscosity increase at 70 sec after the start of measuring (equals to 100 sec if 30 sec of sample loading time is added) demonstrating short working time among test groups. 4. Provil NOVO fast-set(41.71±2.46 kgf/cm2) and Aquasil LV(39.81± 2.16 kgf/cm2) showed significantly higher tensile strength among LV materials (p<0.05). In the case of MV materials, the tensile strength values were greatly different by the tested materials (Aquasil monophase 48.47±5.98 kgf/cm2, Honigum automix-mono 24.87±4.45 kgf/cm2)(p<0.05). 5. MV material groups showed higher permanent deformation values (0.50~0.54%) than those of LV materials groups (0.21~0.57%). Among LV material groups, Provil NOVO showed least permanent deformation (0.21±0.04%) and Charmflex showed highest permanent deformation (0.57±0.08%). 6. LV material groups showed higher strain in compression values (2.33~8.78%) than those of MV material groups (2.14~2.97%)(p<0.05). Among LV meterials groups, Exahiflex showed highest flexibility (8.78±0.08%) while Charmflex showed lowest value (2.33±0.03%) (p<0.05). From the results obtained, it is prudent that selecting adequate material with consideration of the most required property in each specific clinical situation after getting information of the strong and weak points of each product, because the tensile strength, elasticity, setting rate, and flow characteristics of the commercial vinyl polysiloxane dental impression materials are different by the differences of types and products.
