Tires should exert optimum performances necessary to driving a vehicle since tires are the only components which the vehicle contacts with the road surface. For doing it, there exists a tread pattern outside the tire which consists of various shapes of tread blocks and grooves. The tread pattern of a tire has an important effect on tire performances such as handling, wear, noise, hydroplaning, and so on. However, the finite element analysis of a patterned tire with detailed tread blocks has been limited due to the complexity of generating meshes for tread blocks and the huge computation time. Therefore, there-dimensional tire analysis has been traditionally performed by either neglecting detailed tread blocks or including only circumferential grooves. Consequently, such simplified analyses would lead to considerably poor numerical expectations of tire driving performances. A new efficient and effective algorithm for generating tire meshes with detailed tread blocks is proposed. In this algorithm, the tread pattern and tire body meshes are constructed separately in the beginning. First, 3-D meshes for the tread pattern are created by mapping 2-D meshes of the tread pattern geometry onto 3-D curved surfaces and extruding them through the tread depth. Then, 3-D meshes for the tire body are created by rotating 2-D 154 meshes of the tire cut-section geometry. 3-D meshes for the patterned tire are completed by combining the tread pattern and tire body meshes through the incompatible mesh tie constraint. Not only the variable pitches of the tread pattern can be considered in the patterned tire model, but also the variable depths and angles of grooves can be taken into account. Rolling behavior analyses of tires are performed in three categories according to the tire rolling methods. First, the steady-state rolling analysis using a smooth tire model is performed to predict force and moment of a tire. Since tread pattern meshes are not allowed in this analysis due to the axisymmetry assumption, tread elements are modeled to have orthotropic moduli for considering the effect of a tread pattern. It is shown that the direct modeling of the tread pattern is required to predict tire performances accurately since the tread orthotropic model is not sufficient to include the effect of the tread pattern. Then, the quasi-static rolling analysis method is proposed to predict footprint pressure, residual aligning torque, and frictional energy of a tire. The tire is rotated as the quasi-static scheme by applying an angular displacement on the axle in this method. The quasi-static rolling analysis results of the patterned tire model show better agreements with the experimental ones than the smooth tire model. Finally, the transient dynamic rolling analysis method is described to simulate cleat impact and standing wave phenomena of a tire. The tire is rotated as the explicit dynamic scheme by applying an angular velocity on the axle in this method. The dynamic rolling analysis results of the patterned tire model also show better agreements with the experimental ones than the smooth tire model. Therefore, it is concluded that a patterned tire model should be used instead of a smooth tire model in the finite element analysis for predicting the rolling behaviors of tires such as footprint pressure, residual aligning torque, frictional
