In this study, the results of microstructural observation, mechanical properties of Al 5052 alloy jointed by lap friction stir welding(FSW) technique produced under varying rotation tool speed and travel velocity to estimate the effect of each welding parameter were investigated. The following results from the shear strength test, hardness test and the micro/macro observation of the joint using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were obtained. 1. Friction heats induced by a rotating tool cause the recrystallization process in joining area. Although chemical composition change and phase transformation are not found. Also, it is found that the hardness slightly changed. Especially, the hardness of the stir zone and HAZ have shown slightly higher and lower compared to the base material respectively. The variations in hardness can be readily correlated with the grain growth in HAZ and work hardening in stir zone. 2. Unlike the butt FSW, in lapping FSW it is found that the deformation of the “non-joining area shape” in the vicinity of the joint area serves as a critical factor of the strength of the joining materials. Also, the control of the joining factors seems likely to be required to obtain solid lap joint because there is a limited region of the joining factors to produce ideal interface shape. 3. The strength of the joint does not seem to have been influenced by the change in mechanical properties due to recrystallized microstructure because the microstructure of near the stir zone is consistent with that of the base material. In addition, It is determined that the “non-joining area shape” between the upper and bottom plates in the vicinity of TMAZ is the main contributor. 4. It is found that the variation of the rotating speed and travel velocity of the FSW tool has an effect on the shear strength of joint. Also, it appears that FSW process in optimized welding condition essentially results in approximately 90% of the joining efficiency compared to the base material.
