This research investigates the reading theory, Free Voluntary Reading (FVR) by Stephen Krashen, and various ways of reading English books through the use of Book Club - small English library established at Youido in Seoul, Korea. With the increased interests in children's literature by media and the academic circle, this research proves the applicability and effects of FVR for the improvement of children's English literacy. The research period was from February 2005 to March 2006.The conclusions are as follows:First, with Book Club, children unmotivated to learning English have increased their interests toward not only reading English books but learning the English language as a Foreign Language. It proves that FVR activities motivate and entice children to read at home or/and at school.Second, Students attended once a week events with teachers' role modeling the reading behavior. Books which were introduced to students during storytelling time were more likely to be read by students than books displayed in the library shelves. Storytelling introduced various English songs, chants, comprehension activities which differ from conventional after-school English programs. The one-to-one book recommendation by instructors was prized by students as which were at the student's level and interest.Third, for students who weren't able to read independently were given direct instruction, as phonics. Although the students reading ability made reading authentic story books difficult, teachers helped select books which were appropriate to the phonics objectives reinforcing the lessons and independent reading. Students build confidence by participating in English Book Club activities by requesting increase book loans and not wanting to leave the library when classes were finished.Fourth, excessive after reading activity which interfered with students free voluntary reading only showed decrease in learning English. Rather 10 or 20 minutes of daily voluntary English reading considering each one's interest could lead to more desirable and effective results. In conclusion, Book Club gives students the opportunity to experience a variety of genres and creative teaching methods which currently are not used as it should in Korea. English education must change from what it is currently now with students spending majority of their time in after school tutorial programs where methods are outdated to the needs of the students. The same methods used 30 years ago are still implemented. Korea has changed dramatically politically, economically, and socially. It is time to reinvent methods which can help our students to be global leaders. Korea needs to provide our children with opportunities to development themselves. Korea needs to build English libraries including Book Club nationwide apart from 'English Only Zone(E.O.Z)' in Schools and 'English Village(E.V.)' propelled by local autonomous entities for the purpose of better natural and effective result in English ability by children.
