Our study intends to examines cultural values can be represented through the communication forms, political advertising and debates. Considering cross-cultural aspects of political communication, this study explored how political advertising and debates plays a conspicuous role as an indicator of cultural orientations by comparing and contrasting videostyles of the two communication forms between the United States and Korea. A content analysis of verbal, nonverbal and production components of the videostyles showed that televised political spots and debates were highly reflective of the respective cultural values with regard to high-low context communication, degree of uncertainty avoidance, and nonverbal expressions. Thus, indigenous cultural values of the U.S. and Korea tend to be reproduced in idealized form through political advertising and debates, so that people of each country can identify closely with the political candidate of the spots and debates. Furthermore, the results of our analysis indicated that cultural norms are likely to be reflected more in spots than debates. In testing the hypotheses of our study, predicting that cross cultural differences exist in uses of videostyles between two countries, the findings showed that the hypotheses were supported for spots at large, while they seem have not been confirmed for debates, although there were a few exceptions. Thus, cultural norms tend to be appeared more through political advertising, while in debates, the nature of discussion seems to be dominantly presented over cultural norms.
