In this study, the 100 dpi current-driven 4-a-Si:H TFTs red light-emitting AMPLED has been demonstrated and its opto-electronic performance has been evaluated. A six-mask, back-channel-etched, a-Si:H TFT pixel electrode circuit fabrication technologies were developed on the Corning 1737 glass substrates. To fully planarize the uneven 4-a-Si:H TFTs structures, BCB was spin-coated, which, as a planarization layer, provided a flat, planarized surface for the following ITO and PLED active layers. This planarization technique partially solves the charging time issue in the current-driven active-matrix driving scheme at lower data current levels by reducing the parasitic capacitance between data lines and PLED cathode. For AM-PLED demonstration, a poly (fluorene)-based red light-emitting copolymer (red polymer) was used as a light-emissive material. The opto-electronic performance of the red light-emitting PLED was characterized and optimized for AMPLED. Maximum emission, power, and external quantum efficiencies of ~0.8 cd/A, ~0.7 lm/W, and ~1.5% were obtained for the multi-layer PLED with indium-tin-oxide and calcium/aluminum bi-layer metal as an anode and a cathode, respectively. To investigate the electrical characteristics and stability of the AM-PLED, a load line analysis and a current-bias-temperature-stress (C-BTS) of a-Si:H TFTs were performed. A load line analysis based on the measured data of the PLED, a-Si:H TFTs, and the pixel electrode circuit, showed that our pixel electrode circuit has a data current operational limit of ~8 μA at VDD = 30V, which corresponds to the display luminance of ~ 31 cd/㎡. The maximum threshold voltage shift of a-Si:H TFTs under display operation condition was estimated from the C-BTS measurement, which was found to be ~5V for an effective stress current of ~9 μA, a stress temperature of 80°C, and a stress time of 10^(5) second. The pixel electrode circuit simulation result showed that the a-Si:H TFT threshold voltage shift produces the output current change of only ~2 and ~7% for the data current of 5 and 10 μA, which are acceptable for AM-PLED To evaluate the AM-PLED opto-electronic characteristics, an integrating spherebased measurement setup was developed, in which a photo diode or a charge coupled device was used as a light detector. For 100 dpi red light-emitting AM-PLED, a pixel light-emission yield of ~70% and a display luminance of ~20 cd/㎡ at the total data current of 15mA were obtained. From the measured EL spectrum of AM-PLED, the CIE color coordinates of (0.67, 0.33) were calculated, which shows a quite saturated red lightemission in comparison with the CRT red coordinates (0.64, 0.33). Since, in this work, the AM-PLED based on current-driven a-Si:H TFT technology was demonstrated for the first time, I believe that this dissertation will have a tremendous impact on the academic and industrial research in the area of the a-Si:H TFTs AM-OLED/PLED. The experimental data described in this thesis clearly demonstrate that the future a-Si:H TFTs AM-OLED/PLED can challenge or even be preferred to today’s poly-Si TFTs AM-OLED/PLED technology.
