(The) Effects of a Dance/Movement Therapy on the Test Anxiety of Girls in High School : With a focus on the intervention technique by Blanche Evan원문보기

What decides the evaluation of a students in Korea is his or her test results rather than his or her conducts or personality. Thus students are afraid of and worry about tests and complain about physical uneasiness in many cases. In extreme cases poor test results even make one commit suicide. Tests give that much pressure and burden to students, causing various social issues and claiming more and more severity. Thus the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a dance/movement therapy program on the test anxiety and somatization symptoms of girls attending a high school. For that purpose, the following specific research questions were set: First, is a dance/movement therapy program effective in reducing the test anxiety of girls in high school? Second, is a dance/movement therapy program effective in reducing the subelements of their test anxiety including cognitive, emotional, and general elements? Third, is dance/movement therapy program effective in reducing their somatization symptoms? The test anxiety examination, mini mental status examination, and somatization criteria were administered to 121 students of J Academic Girls' High School located in Seoul. Thirty girls within the top 25% of each of the exams were selected and divided into the experiment and control each consisting of 15. A dance/movement therapy program was made up based on the intervention technique by Blanche Evan, who was a dance/movement therapist that emphasized the relaxation of human body and creative and improvisational movements. The program was applied to experiment group once a week 12 times from August 31 to November 16, 2005. Each session lasted 50 minutes. After the completion of the program, testing efforts were made. SPSS 12.0 program was used to do quantitative study for the test anxiety index(TAI-K) and somatization index(SCL-90-R) results. First, the total marks of the test anxiety examination and the marks of its each subelement were used to analyze the changes between the groups and within the groups. As a result, there were significant differences within the experiment group but none within the control group. Then the changes between the groups and within the groups were also investigated for the somatization symptoms. The results were the same with the experiment group having significant differences and the control group having none. In conclusion, dance/movement therapy seemed to reduce the test anxiety and consequent physical symptoms of the girls effectively. Considering the constituents of test anxiety and applying the intervention technique by Blanche Evan, the investigator developed a dance/movement therapy program for girls in high school. It's expected to help them that have much test anxiety and many somatization symptoms today feel stable both psychologically and physically.
