The present study examines the records of diplomatic journey written by the envoys to Japan as a literary genre. So-called Tngsinsa Saheangmunhak(envoy travle literature) is defined as 'literary expressions of direct experience and interaction by the envoys during their stays at Japan'. The scope of examination encompasses the records of diplomatic journey of both Chosun and Japan. The records to be studied were selected among those written while the envoys made their eleventh journey to Japan in the Kyemi year(1763) since the year had produced the largest body and the most various kinds of records. The records contained in Sa Haeng Rok(the records of diplomatic journey authored by Chosun envoys) are categorized by their primary or secondary types into three categories; first, the records whose primary type is diary; second, those whose primary type is poem; and third, those which contain a couple of separate types. Narrative tones of the records in Sa Haeng Rok vary according to the social position of the authors as each of them took a different mission as an envoy to Japan. The present study compares two pieces of record written by a single author or two related authors to see their attitudes toward their own records. First, Hae Sa Il Gi written by Cho Eom was abbreviated into Hae Hang Il Gi by a different editor. Hae Sa Il Gi was an official historical record explaining diplomatic missions in detail and as such could be used as a basic material for other individuals' records. Second, Il Dong Jang Yu Ga and Dong Sa Rok written by Kim Ingyeom - the latter one was missing - diverged in their forms and styles since the author assumed that the audience of the two books would not be the same. Finally, Nam Ok wrote two different types of journey records - Il Gwan Si Cho and Il Gwan Chang Su. The former was a voluntary writing of an account and impression of one's travels while the latter was a compulsory writing of a poem responding to a Japanese one. This shows that Chosun literary men didn't consider a compulsory poem as a literary work.On the other hand, the list of Nam Ok indicated that the number of Japanese literary men contacted by the Chosun envoys was about five hundred. Among those were the guards accompanying the Chosun envoys, the hosts of inns or hotels, medical officials, Buddhist monks, and private literary men. The authors of Phil Dam Chang Su Jib(records of written materials and poetry) compiled in 1763 largely belonged to one of the above groups.Japanese literary men differed in their characters according to their social positions. The official meetings of literary men in both countries became the arena of competition in good faith measuring poetic genius. The hosts of inns and hotels gave the Chosun envoys hospitality as ordered by the feudal government. Accordingly, the conversation by writing was carried on in a polite manner. On the other hand, medical officials not only felt free to ask the envoys questions about medicine and related matters but also gave their opinion without affectation. Literary men including Buddhist monks showed strong interests in the Chosun envoys to Japan who were also interested in getting the information about the Japanese situation. The change of situation in Japan often had effects on the extent to which the Chosun envoys interacted with the Japanese literary men.Phil Dam Chang Su Jib consists primarily of conversation by writing, cantillating poems and letters. Medical officials made use of conversation by writing while literary men preferred poems. In case of no actual meeting, letters or travel sketches were used as in 南宮先生講餘獨覽(Lectures and Readers of Mr. Nangu Taishu) or 朝鮮聘使館浪華記(Travel Logs of Chosun envoys at Osaka), respectively. In Phil Dam Chang Su Jib, Japanese literary men were in the position of being evaluated by Chosun counterparts. However, Chosun literary men paid no attention to the evaluation of Japanese counterparts in Sa Haeng Rok.Japanese literary men included in Phil Dam Chang Su Jib all conversation by writing and every single word and poem shared with Chosun counterparts. 朝鮮聘使館浪華記(Travel Logs of Chosun envoys at Osaka) dealt mainly with diplomatic events and meetings and 韓館應酬錄(records of conversation with Chosun envoys) reflected yearning of Japanese men for Chosun things and culture. Substantial part of Phil Dam Chang Su Jib had no significant meaning, but suggested that diplomatic visit by Chosun envoys was not for good-neighborly relations between both countries but an event to be enjoyed by Japanese people. Chosun things and culture were popular in Japan before and after the visit by Chosun envoys and Phil Dam Chang Su Jib was a mere reflection of the trend.Strictly speaking, literary exchange was a phenomenon among a small number of literary men who attained a certain level of literary achievement. Japanese academic world was dominated by the Sorai school and anti-Sorai school also raised their voice at the time of the diplomatic visit by Chosun envoys in 1763. The Chosun envoys also met representative scholars of Japan who were divided into the Song Theoty and the Sorai school according to their academic inclination - the former school included the Zhu Xi' Theory and the Eclectic School. Chosun literary men were strongly attracted by the Sorai school to the point that they realized neither the merits of the Eclectic School nor the heterogeneity of Japanese historical consciousness as envisaged by the poems of a Zhu Xi' theorist Sibano Rituzan. Though Japanese Confucians became more and more practical, Chosun literary men failed to perceive this trend as they only stayed in Japan for a short time and adhered to a sense of superiority. They came into conflict with the Sorai school who excelled in versification and Chinese classics. Chosun literary men thought highly of Kamei Nanmei regardless of difference in thinking, owing to which he gained fame over the whole country. Chosun literature had developed independent poetics, hence their literary men had more sophisticated view in appreciating literary works than Japanese men who still struggled with the study of old phrases and syntax. The Sorai school were crazy about Lee Eonjin only because he admired Wang ShiZhen, showing that the Japanese scholars looked forward to proper recognition by Chosun counterparts though the school put more emphasis on scholarly application of old phrases and syntax than the mainstream Zhu Xi' Theory.
