Climate is the typical weather conditions in a particular area averaged over some long period of time and has a tremendous impact on how we live such as food, clothing and shelter. Before present heating and air-conditioning systems were introduced, the main determinant index of indoor climate was outdoor climate, and people adjusted their clothing by interacting with outdoor and indoor climate in order to maintain their thermal comfort under a given environment. The introduction of present HVAC system has created artificial indoor climate controlled regardless outdoor climate, and the influence of outdoor climate on indoor climate has become weakened. On the other hand, the influence of indoor climate on human thermal adaptation and comfort became larger, partly because of the introduction of present HVAC system and partly because of staying indoors for a longer time. There are so many variables which can cause different human thermal adaptation states; outdoor climate, acclimation to HVAC spaces, dress code, cultural differences, etc. Though the influences of these factors on the operational conditions of built environment and their mechanism are not clear and hard to measure, the comparison of field measurements carried out in various cities and countries which have their own climate condition, different history of using heating or air conditioning system and inherent cultural context can give us some hints of this mechanism. The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the human thermal adaptation state from the comparison of indoor thermal environment via a field study that characterizes the indoor thermal environment of various building types in various cities in Korea, USA and Japan for transitional and winter season. The measurement surveys took place in various indoor spaces of Seoul, Korea, six cities in Northwest USA such as Eugene, OR, Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA, Moscow, ID and Phoenix, AZ, and Yokohama, Japan from September, 2005 to February, 2006. Three outdoor physical variables (air temperature, relative humidity and globe temperature) and four indoor environmental variables (air temperature, globe temperature, relative humidity and air velocity) were measured, and two personal variables (clothing level and activity) were observed according to three different occupants groups such as visitors, residents and transients. 1055 data sets in Korea, 1079 data sets in USA and 194 data sets in Japan were collected, and 63% of collected data sets in USA were measured from Eugene, OR.The key conclusions drawn from this research are as follows.1) Korea which has the coldest winter showed the warmest indoor climate in air-conditioned spaces, and the thermal sensations of occupants in Korea were also predicted warmer than USA occupants. Occupants’ clothing behaviors varied according to each region, too. On average, USA occupants wore less clothing than Korean and Japanese occupants despite of the lowest indoor air temperature. By city, occupants in Phoenix wore less clothing than those in Yokohama in spite of the same mean indoor temperature in air-conditioned spaces of two cities, and this might be affected by the hot outdoor climate condition in Phoenix.2) Outdoor climate relates to the operational thermal environment for both air-conditioned and naturally-ventilated spaces, and of course, the influences of outdoor climate conditions on indoor climates were very large in naturally-ventilated spaces. By country, the indoor air temperature of Japan was the most sensitively changed by outdoor air temperature variation not only in naturally-ventilated spaces but also in air-conditioned spaces. One of interesting results was that indoor environments located in neighboring regions resemble each other (Figure 5.2 and 5.4), and this might resulted from the same outdoor climate condition, usage history of heating or cooling system and culture of those regions.3) Outdoor climate showed strong influence on visitors’ clothing behavior in all countries, and transients’ clothing behaviors could be accounted for by outdoor air temperature to some extent. However, residents’ clothing had no relations with outdoor air temperature except Japan, and the regression analyses of indoor climate on occupants’ clothing level didn’t show significant results in Korea and USA, too.4) Some convincing evidences that people have different thermal adaptation states according to cities and countries were found and examined to figure out the reason of these different thermal adaptation states from the view of outdoor climate influences, acclimation to heating or cooling system and cultural adaptation. Korean cold winter prompted the development of traditional heating system, Ondol, and these early uses of heating system indoors inclined Korean thermal adaptation state toward warm comfort, preferring and expecting warm thermal environment in winter. On the other hand, in hot regions such as Phoenix and Hong Kong, the popularization of air conditioning system shifted their human thermal expectations and preferences toward cool comfort. Some evidences of cultural adaptation could be found in people’s clothing behaviors, too; low clothing level of Eugene occupants because of the casual dress code as a university town and high clothing level of Pakistan residents because of the cultural dress code of a Muslim country as well as the character of long clothing in desert area.Different human adaptation states of each region means that the comfort zone is different by regions, which are influenced by three factors such as outdoor climate condition, acclimation of heating and cooling system and cultural adaptation. These different human adaptation states of each region should be preserved for physiological homeostasis as well as considered for the development of a desirable control method of indoor climate. Thus current universally applicable international standards with a fixed temperature range have to be reconsidered because wide human thermal adaptation states according regions are in danger of being locked in narrow adaptation range by these standards. These narrow human adaptation states will request more and more heating and cooling spaces which increase energy consumption.
