This study examines 3-, 4-, 5-year olds"s stress behaviors in mixed-, and same-age group at daycare center, and the interaction among types of age group, individual factor (age), family factor (siblings), and institutional factor (years of institutional experiences) upon young children's stress behaviors. The research questions are following. 1. Do 3-, 4-, 5-year olds' stress behaviors differ, at the time of afternoon free-choice activity, in accordance with types of age group? 2. Do 3-, 4-, 5-year olds' stress behaviors differ, at the time of afternoon free-choice activity, in accordance with types of age group and individual ages? 3. Do 3-, 4-, 5-year olds' stress behaviors differ, at the time of afternoon free-choice activity, in accordance with types of age group and siblings? 4. Do 3-, 4-, 5-year olds' stress behaviors differ, at the time of afternoon free-choice activity, in accordance with types of age group and years of institutional experiences? This research was conducted regarding 7 daycare center located in Seoul. Total of 60 children aged 3, 4, and 5(20 respectively) are from 2 daycare center with a same-age group for afternoon programs, and another 60 children aged 3, 4, 5(20 respectively) are from 5 daycare center with a mixed-age group for afternoon programs. Class Child Stress Behavior Instrument, as implemented by Burts, Hart, Charlesworth and Kirk (1990), and translated and modified by Koh Heejeong(1998) for Korean children and free-choice activity, were utilized, and time sampling technique was used to observe the individual child for the total of 20 minutes (1,200 seconds), 40 times of 30 second observation respectively. Independent T-test was conducted to observe the differences in 3-, 4-, 5-year olds' stress behaviors according to types of age group. Two-way ANOVA was run to understand the interactions between types of age group and children's age, sibling, years of institutional experiences, and interaction effects are further verified by Scheffe test. The results are as following. First, according to the analysis on stress behaviors in relation to types of age group, general stress behaviors and passive stress behaviors show significant differences, with the stress level higher in the same-age classes than in the mixed ones. The significant differences were observed in forms of physical signs of stress, rejection against others, spectator attitude among the sub-categories of passive stress behaviors, and in forms of stress behaviors against other people among the sub-categories of active stress behaviors, with the stress level higher in the same-age classes. Second, according to the analysis on stress behaviors in relation to types of age group and individual ages of children, general stress behaviors, passive stress behaviors, and active stress behaviors are higher among 5 year old children than among 3 or 4 year olds. The stress higher among 5 year old children took the forms of physical signs of stress, rejection against others among the sub-categories of passive stress behaviors, and stress behaviors against other people and stress behaviors against objects among the sub-categories of active stress behaviors. In the meantime, the spectator attitude was observed higher among 3 year old children. In relation to interaction between types of age group and individual ages, significant interaction was observed in general stress behaviors and rejection against others among sub-categories of passive stress behaviors, and stress behaviors against other people among sub-categories of active stress behaviors. Generally, the stress level grows higher along with ages in the same-age classes than in mixed ones, Third, according to the analysis on stress behaviors in relation to types of age group and siblings, significant differences were observed in general stress behaviors and passive stress behaviors, with the eldest children among siblings showing higher level of stress than the rest. In relation to interaction between types of age group and siblings, the results were not significant, showing no differences in level of stress according to siblings in both same-age and mixed classes. Forth, according to the analysis on stress behaviors in relation to types of age group and years of institutional experiences, facial expressions among the sub-categories of passive stress behaviors and stress behaviors against other people among the sub-categories of active stress behaviors were significantly more frequent among children with less than 1 year education at the daycare center in comparison to those with more than 1 year experience at the daycare center. In addition, the stress behaviors against the objects among the sub-categories of active stress behaviors was higher among children with more than 1 year education at the daycare center. The interaction between the types of age group and years of institutional experiences was only significantly affected in spectator attitude, wherein such attitude showed no difference among children with more than 1 year education at the daycare center, but the level of spectator attitude was higher among the same-age classes of children with less than 1 year education at the daycare center.
