In this study, pollutant concentration distribution characteristic inside tunnel was investigated for purpose of estimation of influencing parameters and prediction of pollutant concentration at the exit. The number of tunnels has been recently increased because of geographical features and increased number of vehicles. In addition, owing to upgraded technology, the size of tunnel becomes longer and bigger. The use of ventilation force theory force to expect pollutant concentration at tunnel exit is anticipated to cause some error. In this study, empirical formula with measurement data was utilized to expect concentrations at tunnel outside. Measurement was carried out 9 times from 11 A.M to 4 P.M in each day, when more traffic density was expected. Concentration of PM10, CO, CO2, NOx, O3 were measured, and the number of vehicles passed, average speed and weather condition were examined. Real time PM10 concentration was presented as 1 minute average and other gas pollutants concentration were as 5 minutes average. Real time concentration of CO2 was monitored along the length of 4.6km inside tunnel at 4.2km/hr speed at 2m high to estimate pollutant distribution characteristic.Oneway tunnel CO2 concentration showed smooth increase from entrance of tunnel to exit of tunnel. Based on the result, pollutant concentration would increase smooth according to vehicle moving direction. Concentrations of PM10, CO, NOx and O3 were measured to obtain the influence of a number of vehicles to pollutant concentrations. As a result, concentrations of CO and NOx were strongly correlated with vehicle number, while PM10 was not explained by vehicle number only. There was no significant correlation-ship between vehicle number and O3, which flowed in from tunnel outside. Ventilation system of long tunnel in this study was consisted of jet-fan and vertical pit. Vertical pit is located 3.5km far from entrance in 4.6km of total length of tunnel. Most of CO2 concentration was continuously increased toward exit, indicating vertical pit had little effect on pollutant concentration. The use of both empirical formula and actual data is required to avoid possible error caused by calculation based on simple ventilation force theory in estimating concentrations of pollutants at the tunnel exit.Pollutant concentrations at tunnel outside is influenced by both jet-fan and vehicle ventilations. Vehicle ventilation becomes major variable factor because of the controlled operation of jet-fan. The amount of vehicle ventilation was calculated by the type, speed and number of vehicles. And that value is proportional to the projected area, speed, and the number of vehicles. In summary, more reasonable estimation of pollutant concentration at tunnel outside was possible in this study by means of empirical formula and actual measurement of concentration distribution and the change of vehicle ventilation.
