The main objective of this dissertation work is to investigate effeiciect and flexible channel access strategies in a broadband ISDN (BISDN). For the traffic control and efficient channel utilization in a communication network, an accurate predection of network performance is improtant. To achieve better utilization of access channels in the networks, various channel access strategies and overflow mechanisms have been proposed so far. However, in BISDN envirnmonet, multiple heterogeneous types of traffic are served and their traffic characteristics are different from each other. Therefore, new strategies and performance analyses of the traffic control and channel utilization should be done on these heterogeneous traffics with appropriate traffic modeling. For this purpose, channel access strategies in a trunk reservation system are studied first. The system is modeled as a partial over flow queueing system with two kinds of calls. Two trunk-group assignment strategies and two trunk-channel assignment policies, each for five different queue arragements, are considered. Their performances are analyzed in terms of loss and delay probablities using the matrix-geometric technique and the generating function method. Numerical results show that the common-wait system has the lowest total loss probability, the highest total delay probability, and the highest total throughput, while the waitloss system has the lowest total delay probability, and the loss-loss system has the lowest total throughput. Next, a channel access strategy combined with a both-way overflow mechanism for heterogeneous traffics in a BISDN is proposed. This channel access strategy allocates channel bandwidth dynamically to multiple heterogeneous traffics having different intensities, bit rates and holding times. A queueable high bit-arte traffic can overflow downwardly to a lower bit-rate channel by a bit-rate compression mechanism and also a queueable lower bit-rate traffic can overflow upwardly to a higher bitrate channel. To protect the deterioration of the performance caused by overflow mechanisms, threshold parameters are also considered. The proposed system is modeled as an $M/M/C_i/(C_i+N_i)$ queueing system with statedependent arrival rates. By considering the state-dependent arrival rates, we can compensate the inaccuracy caused by the Poission approximateion of the overflow process. The performance investigated shows that this kind of overflow mechanism gives a significant improvement in access performance. Finally, the performance of a channel access strategy with overflow mechanisms for heterogeneous bursty traffics in BISDN is analyzed. In this analysis, each bursty traffic and also the overflow traffic is modeled as a Markov-modulated Poisson process (MMPP) and the different burstiness of each traffic is represented by changing the parameters of the MMPP. Then, the cannel access strategy is analyzed as an $MMPP/M/C_i/(C_i+N_i)$ queueing system. With this traffic model, the parcel loss and delay probabilities and the mean queuing time are obtained. From numerical results, the effects of each traffic's characteristic on the performance are shown. We cna note that the burstiness of the MMPP increases as the difference between arrival rates becomes large and as the state duration times becomes long. And the parcel loss and delay probabilities increase as the burstiness of the traffic increases.
