As the inter-Korean cooperation began to be activated since the Joint Statement on June 15th 2000, a wide range of views have been suggested lately in an attempt to redefine military values, regarding weakening perception of probable major enemy. This study was designed to compare the effects of role and learning variables in relation with military values of the soldiers currently on service. A questionnaire survey was administered on combat soldiers belonging to combat units of standing divisions on service and non-combat soldiers such as general administration soldiers of support units.Analysis of data indicated that there was a certain relationship between military values and role and learning variables. Diversity of military values was examined between the two groups of combat and non-combat soldiers selected as a role variable. More specifically, in terms of the awareness on patriotism, nuclear threat from and arms capabilities of the North Korea, and possibility of invasion by the North, substantial differences were found between the two groups. Also, the study showed that there were various views between the lower- and higher-level soldiers used as a learning variable. In particular, the awareness on lifetime goal, faithfulness and positive attitudes on their service was found to be varied. As discussed above, results of this study revealed that there was a difference in military values between combat soldiers and non-combat soldiers as a role variable, as well as between the group of lower-level soldiers consisting private 1st and 2nd classes and that of higher-level soldiers corresponding to corporals and sergeants as a learning variable. The results of comparison between the two variables reaffirmed the importance of the role variables. In short, in forming military values, role variables relative to performing duties by the classifications of combat soldiers and non combat soldiers are considered more important than a learning variable, or rank divided by the period of service only, in spite of the same duties. Accordingly, strengthened moral education for non-combat soldiers and for lower-level soldiers is necessary to increase the efficiency of moral education in the army.
