PTFE(poly tetrafluoroethylene) is used for large-caliber artificial blood vessel now a days. It has good mechanical and chemical properties. However, it has some problems to apply in transplantation for a long term as small-caliber artificial blood vessel because blood clot, leakage of blood and an immune reaction in short period and neo-intima is formed after long period. There has been trial to react directly human tissue with endothelial cell located inside blood vessel which control biological reaction related to blood. However, adhesion of cell to PTFE is not good because PTFE has strong hydrophobic property. Many researches using chemical and physical treatment have been taken for solving this problem. And I suggest noble method of surface treatment using atmospheric pressure plasma jet system to chemically treated PTFE for enhancement of cell adhesion in this paper.A capacitor was used to prevent transition high temperature plasma of conventional arc torch, and was reactive gas flow control experiments for injection of only aureole which is originated around the arc core. Sine wave power is used for generation of plasma jet with oxygen gas, and oscilloscope and thermocouple are used for measurement of current, voltage and temperature characteristics respectively. It was realized that the system could control current below 0.5 ampere which was up to several amperes generated in arc and had low temperature plasma jet with only aureole region.I conducted surface energy measurement, composition analysis for micro structural change after oxygen plasma treatment for making surface in which cell could have condition of good adhesion. I conducted 2-step process. First step is chemical treatment to PTFE which is strong hydrophobic polymer and second step is the oxygen plasma treatment using jet. This reaction is increase of polar component of the surface and increase of overall surface energy. We could also know that hydrophilic functional group increase through XPS analysis. Finally, PTFE surface which is not lots of change after chemical treatment, increase in degree of surface morphology with oxygen plasma treatment and then change to porous structure. This result is due to the etching effect. In other words, flat surface after chemical treatment is expected only adhesion effect with cell functional group, however porous structural surface after plasma treatment is expected enhanced adhesion effect. In conclusion, cells easily attach to the plasma treated surface and then react with functional groups.
